I find they annoy me intensely and I don't know how to respond.

Rule number one is :

Do Not feed the Troll.

Simple as that. Ignore them if they attack you, and they'll target other people if they don't get a reaction out of you.

Give an example of how this patronising plays out & I'm sure people can give you razor sharp retorts.

I used to work with this ...hefty older lady, who'd look me up & down like she's inspecting a show pony, and tell me in a snarky tone "Sweety, you look so well put together...today."

Eventually I got sick of it & replied with something along the lines of "Thanks. You look great today too, you're glowing! Are you pregnant?" I didn't get anymore back-handed compliments from that bovine.
