If I'm honest, I really enjoyed it..
I think it's quite a good rendition of the US version. Yes, it does appear staged, but so does the US version.. Maybe everyone is just overly critical because it's yet another SA-made copy/paste of an already successful US show. It isn't supposed to be an SA remake of Schindler's List for goodness sake. It's a "reality" show that's just supposed to be fun, and nothing more. Personally, I think it did quite well.
Regarding the accents, unless they decided to film at a local cash converters, it isn't all that surprising that it's Israeli owned. I mean, most of these pawn shops are owned by Israeli's/Russians/Ukrainians/etc.. Welcome to South Africa! I'm happy that it's run by Israelis, because they have no skaam in negotiating. Take the first episode for example..

The pawn shop is across the road from my office - didn't realise it was the place in question.

No, I was returning from meeting my contractor at Builders Express (a block down) and when I glanced in the store actually looked quite nicely laid out and well presented (unlike many pawn shops which just stack cr@p 3 metres high). Decided to go in - got talking to the big guy (Aytan, I think) and he told me to watch Pawn Stars tonight.
Where exactly is this shop? I was looking out for it when going down on Jan Smuts when I did the 947 Cycle Challenge on Sunday, but did not see their shop.
It's about 400m down the road from Hyde Park Corner shopping centre, and about a block up the road from the Colony Centre, Rochester and Builders Express.
If that is the place, I would have passed it, but most probably were too tired to notice!
