pay per gig and shaping

ok, just a bit confused here.

does anyone else remember the reasons telkom cited for shaping their adsl lines? I seem to recall that they said that it was going to be shaped because of some users abusing the system.

ok now that they have countered the abusers by making them pay for usage, does that mean the shaping is going to go away? because me personally I think that it is complete rubbish if i am forced to pay a premium for a product or service and then the suppplier can dictate to me how i can or cannot use their product.

If it comes down to it i think there might even be a lawsuit in it. Should you not be allowed to do what you want with something you have paid for? now me personally, I mainly use the net for online games. but if i get adsl i cant play online as the shaping is ridiculous. i mean i may as well stick to dial up, its faster for games.

Only telkom could try to justify shaping a capped service.

I've sent them a few e-mails regarding the shaping of a capped service, but obviously they havnt responded, not supprised at all

Even if Telkom offers everyone unshaped adsl, it would still be shaped. Their current unshaped package is definitely still shaped, just not as much.

ADSL is a shared service, therefore the sum of all line speeds sold will always way exceed the upstream interconnect bw purchased, and this oversubscription is know as the contention. The higher the contention Telkom can achieve without noticable congestion, the higher their profit.

Throttling/de-prioritising protocols that require continuous bw (e.g. most P2P) is the easiest method of reducing upstream interconnect congestion (e.g. on SAT3). But this congestion can also be reduced by purchasing more upstream bw, so in reality they shape to maintain/increase profitibility.

friedpiggy has raised a very valid point, while I agree with roman4604's explanation, we should use this to score unshaped accounts for capped accounts.

it wouldn't be bad if their shapped service was cheaper that world standard. but since they are pushing the price high then we should demand better service for what we pay.

Lol. So to sum it up we have:

1. Rediculously priced PER GIG pricing
2. VERY heavy port shaping
3. An undisclosed contention ratio...presumably excessively high! (Would love to see that ratio!)


What a joke. Everything good about ADSL has been stripped....i'm sure it has NOTHING to do with Telkom protecting their ludicrously priced diginet line market and protecting themselves from the big bad VOIP!
