Pay-TV competition failure

ICASA to blame!

The title should read:

"ICASA's delay leads to Pay-TV Competion Failure"
I don't think that ODM and Telkom Media will launch in 2009. It's wishful thinking IMO.

Pay-tv

Its not gonna happen this year or even 2010, i doubt there is goin to be launch anytime soon. Lets just forget about it, we should just cope with repeats from Dstv. Imagine if we had only sabc 1,2,3 and etv, i dont want to think about that.

We'll be lucky if we get competitors in 2011... We had to cut our DSTV, so yeah, the only reason why I have a TV now is to watch my series and movies on.

If ICASA delays things too long, the competition will run out of funds, and silently die off. Hope they take ICASA to task on that one, if/when that happens.

“We are the very first and the only broadcaster in South Africa that is 100% committed to broadcasting programming that is free of violence, free of nudity, free of sex, free of abuse and free of abusive language,” the company states.

I cant see them being too successful with these restrictions. There is nothing left to watch. :p:p

I would switch to any other service provider if they brought in MTV2... even if i had to pay more!

The only thing DSTV is good for is

Discovery
History
BBC Knowledge
BBC Entertainment
Series
MM1
MM2
SS1
SS2
SS3

Other than that... well... nothing. Does DSTV have a service where you can choose only 10 channels or so? Would be nice of competition brings a feature like that (if that ever happens).

That's just it.
You're actually paying R40-R50 per channel for those channels and the rest are FREE
I don't think R500+ a month is justifiable, someone is making a massive profit

I would love to know whos payroll ICASA is on as they are always delaying competition or making sure that the monopoly guys stay at the top.

ICASA = FAIL!!!!!

Let general market forces rule!

Surely the most fair and acceptable way to give other organisations a chance to compete is to do away with the 'competition' style bid and just allow companies to apply for a licenses as and when that company has the resources to do so.

Lets face it when a competition is held companies have to scramble for resources placing them at a huge unfair advantage to the incumbents. Its time government realised that general market forces should rule in the broadcasting space!

No, Barney has homosexual tendencies. You'll probably end up seeing Zet on there again...

Wow, surprise surprise, !CASA failed again.
Perhaps guavamunt should get involved? Oh wait, their existing broadcaster is already screwed!
*sigh* When will things in this country change?

1. They need to force the issue with decoders to make it viable for the new companies to come in. this is like cell companies selling network + number blocked phones.. it aint gonna work.

2. I think the DTT will be a better platform for smaller pay tv + freebie channels to come on anyway. Sat tv in someways is old school unless they offering hdtv<or other high def stuff which maybe is too bulky>

3. I just hope, and i see its happen already, multi-choice + sabc don't get a large number of channel spots. Handout a few regional ones too and see if they can survive etc? before letting larger companies take over esp pay tv ones.

South Africa is an over-regulated economy. If they could do away with all the regulations and open up the market in entertainment, telecoms etc we would have more employment and more wealth created in the economy.

India did that and they enjoyed double digit growth and more than 6% growth in times of recession.

Telkom was next to throw in the towel when it announced in March 2008 that it planned to rid itself of its stake in Telkom Media. The pay-TV company was at risk of being closed down after Telkom Media’s shareholders unanimously voted in favour of a special resolution to wind up Telkom Media in April, but a last minute deal, in which Shenzhen Media South Africa bought Telkom’s 75% stake, has kept the company alive on life support.

Electronic Communications Act, 2005
Chapter 3 : Licensing Framework
13. Transfer of individual licences or change of ownership
1) An individual licence may not be assigned, ceded or transferred to any other person without the prior written permission of the Authority.

64. Limitations on foreign control of commercial broadcasting services
1) A foreigner may not, whether directly or indirectly
a) exercise control over a commercial broadcasting licensee; or
b) have a financial interest or an interest either in voting shares or paid-up capital in a commercial broadcasting licensee, exceeding twenty (20) percent.
2) Not more than twenty (20) percent of the directors of a commercial broadcasting licensee may be foreigners.

or is china not considered "foreign" any more?
