I have noticed that in many countries like the US and the UK etc. There is a surcharge for activating 4G/LTE on your phone. Just wondering why this has never come in to effect in South Africa, not complaining.

Is that maybe for uncapped accounts?

IMO 4G quality here is quite poor due to lack of frequency spectrum, so difficult to charge extra for it.

Mmmmmmm no. I dont think we did. I do however have a very vague memory of there being a higher fee for HSDPA bundles compared to the normal 3G ones when Vodacom launched HSDPA on the network. The LTE apn code on our system have always been R0.00 on our VAS menu.

EDIT: OMG .... is that how long I have been doing this job for? Before Vodacom even had 3G? God am getting old

You guys(Vodacom) had that whole "Advanced" thing where you paid extra compared to normal data.

The Advanced bundles was that your out of bundle rate was the same as your in bundle. In the beginning the Advanced bundle got you access to the HSDPA network, but that was soon dropped and everyone was allowed to get those speeds regardless of what bundle you bought.

I dont know. I am a mere pleb in the Vodacom world. The people doing the dealsheets and financials and deciding how much support goes into the deals is way above my fireplace

If I remember correctly, only some contracts were qualifying for 3G connection. This way they could manipulate customers to sign into a new contracts. But network was not congested in that time, they could afford it. Once bandwith become saturated, they had to allow access to all (including prepaid), so network resources could be utilized more efficiently.
