I have a final demand from SARS, as well as a notice of penalty assessment. Where do I get the Payment Reference Number to pay each of these? It is not on the correspondence itself.

The cadres run SARS who are clowns at best, so best to just phone them and check.

1) log into SARS efiling..
2) top of page on the right click on "Tax Status"
3) on the left click on "Tax Compliance Status"
4) it will then drop down some options, click on "My Compliance Profile"

this will then show you in green or red if you owe any money or if any returns are outstanding
as usual with SARS payment is a pain in the ass, you would think you could just click on the amount you need to pay and could zapper it it or pay by credit card and it clears right away like any online payment... no, anyway.

So how do you pay then?

you need to get a specific reference number for that specific payment <-- notice the specific. Then you can log into your normal internet banking and pay a public recipient (fnb) then you need to select the SARS branch, eg. SARS-PROV would be for provisional taxpayers. Then make 100% sure you enter the correct reference number.

you can also go into SARS and ask them for a print out of what you owe, they should print you out various statements with payment instructions on the letter at the bottom.

it is the world's most backward braindead department when it comes to IT

I tried making a payment by clicking the Pay Now button, and I am seriously not sure what it's supposed to do.

you can then download a "get notice" pdf file, which is like a bill, right at the bottom it should have the reference number and which department to pay.

look for a "statement of account" when you download that there will be all the instructions at the bottom.
on it will be name of banking institution, account name, payment reference number, amount payable.
