I tried, the staff thought PayPal was an ABSA product... I'll have to try harder next time.

Just link it via online banking, just five clicks and you are done.

I have tried with no success...

When paypal asks for your card type (which in my case is a master card), card number and cvv it just fails over and over again. This is part of the validation process, and without it, I cant link my fnb and paypal accounts. Now I have my own theory as to why this may be... in the process of asking for your card number and that, they are essentially trying to bill your card with $1.95, which FNB seems to be rejecting. Possible reasons in my opinion: One, my mastercard is a debit card and not a credit card (Can you use a mastercard debit card for online purchases?) and the other possible reason is that my account is an FNB student account (but surely any FNB account should be able to work with paypal???).

So no, I am not using paypal even though I want to. And when I went in to FNB last week they were clueless about paypal.
"Can you tell me what is paypal exactly" was the response I got... and the FNB call centre just kept shoving me around from department to department.

I had some struggles to get this working.

Firstly you need a personal cheque account or CC from FNB. Regardless of what the people at the branches tell you, or what their website leads you to believe, those are the only accounts that will work with Paypal (I was told this by call centre operator who checked the system and confirmed which accounts would work).

Once you have a working account the easiest way to authorize your PayPal account is to use a CC from your normal bank. I used my Virgin Money CC and the transaction went through immediately. Once you have a verified PayPal account you can do the linking from FNB's side. Follow the steps and they'll e-mail you with a link verification code. Enter that and you are successfully linked.

One thing is that the PayPal account tends to take a while to show under your accounts tab. I don't know how long it takes for them to reflect an actual balance. I've got the $1.95 in my PayPal account, but in FNB banking it shows "No balance Available". I'm guessing it's just some sort of delay.

Guess it's normal then. I thought it was just mine.

I'll see how things go when I receive my first payments around the 20th. If everything pans out I'm going to be closing my ABSA cheque account soon and save R60 p/m in the process.

Well, I've had a PayPal account verified since 2005. So I didn't have an ounce of trouble at all when I signed up and opened an account with FNB. I used the words: "A cheque account compatible with PayPal please" and they picked up the phone and went "Which accounts are all PayPal compatible?" and they gave me a list of accounts which I could choose from. Really nothing to it. You just have to use the right words and actually be willing to help the customer (as FNB did for me)

Once I had access to online banking it was a crapshoot really. The email they send with the verification code took so long to arrive that my internet session on FNB timed out, for some reason FNB's website doesn't notify you of this like Standard Bank does. Logging back in again I couldn't pick up where I left off, and thus started another 4 attempts at getting the verification code in a timely fashion.

When that was finished it took a couple of hours for PayPal to be listed as one of my accounts. Nothing to it really.

I'm just glad I can now have a positive balance in my PayPal now, it really helps to get paid in there and leave it there for services I pay for on a monthly basis through it. Which means I don't have to struggle with forex and **** just to get enough money in my credit card for it to be used as foreign currency again.

Cool bananas.
Now, let me go and examine the charges associated with this service, because, nobody here is mentioning those .. for some reason.

Right -
Paypal fee's : 3.9% of any incoming money belongs to Paypal. (+ $0.30)
FNB fee's : 1.5% of any incoming (PayPal to your FNB account) money belongs to FNB.

Total loss = 5.4% ... just above the usual 5% loss usually experienced with this type of transacting.

In addition, to place money into the PayPal acount costs 1.5% which belongs to FNB, so ... don't do that.

Paypal fee's: https://www.paypal.com/za/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_display-xborder-fees-outside&countries=
FNB's paypal fee's: https://www.fnb.co.za/online-banking/pay-pal.html (Under WHAT WILL IT COST)

All in all - a louzy solution.

For me the extra cost is well worth it. It's an extreme hassle to get foreign currency cheques deposited. ABSA has changed their mandates so they have to send all foreign cheques for collection, which takes 4-6 weeks and costs anything from R200 - R2000.

With PayPal the funds would reflect immediately and hopefully there will be no hassles. In the end it might even be a cheaper option...

Also had Paypal for a few years, so it was quite simple for me to link to my FNB account...

Can you tell me if a student account or "life start" account was one of those compatible accounts mentioned?

Qualifying FNB accounts include most FNB savings, cheque and transmission accounts. When completing a FNB Top Up or Withdraw with PayPal transaction, a list of all your qualifying FNB accounts that can be used for this service will be displayed. Remember that they will have to be linked to your FNB Online Banking profile in order for them to be displayed. A credit card account is not a qualifying account for this service.

Note: FNB Top Up and Withdraw with PayPal is only available to personal and business users with qualifying FNB accounts and access to FNB Online Banking. The service is not available to Online Banking EnterpriseTM users. All FNB Top Up and Withdraw with PayPal transactions are subject to Terms and Conditions.

That's misleading. Unfortunately no business accounts will apparently work, and according to the consultant I spoke to neither would any savings accounts. You need a cheque account or CC. Best option would be to phone FNB Online banking helpline and ask them for compatible accounts - at least that's where I found someone who knew what was going on.

I can confirm that a Smart Cheque Account works.
If you have FNB online banking and you have another account then you should check if the PayPal links are visible. If not you don't have a qualifying account.

I signed up for Paypal. I then went to my FNB account to link the two, but it said I had entered the wrong verification code. The only code I got from Paypal was like 20 digits and it was called a "confirmation code". I don't know why it's not working?

Hi, I'm new :)

I eventually got the verification code email from FNB but I'm still stuck. On step 4 of the linking process I had to log into PayPal from FNB, but when I clicked the link it opened a separate window and it said "FNB top up". Then it wanted me to enter credit card details to complete a purchase. I tried entering the number on the debit card but it didn't work. So I was unable to link my FNB with PayPal :(

I emailed PayPal and they said that I don't need to verify a credit or debit card, and that I can just link the two, but it doesn't work :(

Freaksta did the same thing happen to you on step 4? Did you have to fill in any card details when you logged in ?
