My understanding is that it needs to be either Visa/MC, i.e. credit card or cheque card. So I'm not sure if that will work.

It might be possible via FNBs mechanism in their online banking, but then you certainly won't be able to verify your card with PayPal.

They negotiated to bring PayPal to SA, so I don't think that it's unreasonable to expect a certain period of exclusivity. The service is not going to be exclusive to FNB forever - however your guess is as good as mine as to how long the exclusivity period is.
 
I would have loved to be able to receive funds through PayPal, but if it means I must have an FNB account - Not in a month of Sundays. Been there...

Disappointing article. "Paypal's lack of plans in SA" would be a more appropriate byword.

Travelling abroad could work. Bear in mind the banking and anti-money laundering laws in the EU. From my experience it is almost impossible to open a foreign bank account. Even if you are a national/passport holder for the country you wish to open the account with.
One needs at least TWO utility bills with your name and address on it. If you know someone in the foreign EU country you might be able to beg them to put your name on the Council Tax and gas bill. You'd probably also need to show your proof of residency. I don't know of any other way to get a bank account (in the UK). Once you have this, only then can you try to apply for a bank account.

That is not all. The next step is opening the EU Paypal account. Your (EU/UK) debit card address need to be verified, and a (mobile) phone number from the country you are applying for would be of enourmous benefit. You can then receive SMS's and confirmations via your UK mobile number. UK mobiles, even pre-paid, have international roaming activated as standard. As long as you send/receive a SMS at least every 3 months your number won't disappear and you can keep the number active on roaming in S-Africa.
 
UK / ZA Paypal account link ?

I have a UK Paypal account, as well as a UK bank account. Would it be possible to transfer transfer funds from a South African Paypal to a UK Paypal account ? The objective is to transfer funds from ZAR to GBP and eventually into my UK bank account, without going through the hell that is called 'foreign exchange controls'.
In short: I would like to fund/top-up my UK bank account without going through the exchange control hell.

I live in S-Africa, and I have British nationality and still have some minor direct debits (small life insurance policy, etc) that needs occasional funding/top-up.

assuming they have exclusivity... some banks in this country are just so far behind the times, they may never have it.
i'm not ned-essarily thinking of any bank in particular... :whistle:
 
Screw PayPal - closes your account for no reason, high charges, etc. I've already unlinked my account again.

if it werent for FNB we wouldnt even have paypal available in S.A, atleast they opened the door, no one else even bothered. it just proves the superior bank that they are, you didnt expect them to invest everything they did to open the door to other banks ?

rather wonder why no other bank is making any moves to get linked to paypal themselves ?

be gratefull to FNB rather than bitch and wine and throw tantrums.

I opened my US bank account over the net. There is no need to travel oversees just to open an account

I will moan if I feel like it as I have been screwed over by PayPal in the past. Have you even used them? Have you ever had the misfortune of implementing their API as a payment gateway for clients? FNB certainly didn't do it for altruistic reasons, it's just another way to screw us over with more bank charges.

2) What documentation was required?
3) Which bank in the US?

actualy i use them alot, and ive never had problems with them, it is linked to my FNB and it works like a charm. most of the world uses paypal without problems, on many websites paypal is trusted and on many of them paypal is prefered over any other form of payment including credit cards.

maybe if you abide by their rules you wouldnt be having problems and wouldnt need to lash out at FNB.

Perhaps you should read some stories on www.aboutpaypal.org - you will notice many people "abiding" by the PayPal rules get screwed over. My contact with PayPal is now limited to integration with client stores if they insist on using PayPal.

Using PayPal to buy is a non-issue except in one scenario. When you are selling, PayPal will freeze your account if someone uses a dodgy card or issues a charge back. You will then not see your cash for months or perhaps never. See www.paypalsucks.com
