Paywall: there will be casualties

Paywalls may have been a success in the beginning phases of the Internet. Not any more. People will not sign up and pay thousands of Rands to gain access to content they can find free elsewhere.

There are so many large institutions on the Internet who found this out the hard way and were forced to either scrape paywalls or offer more and better incentives for users to sign up to.

South Africa is still about 15 years behind the rest of the world when it comes to the Internet. There are still too many 'fat cats' sitting in their offices and thinking to themselves they will make millions and millions from implementing paywalls. They simply do not realize that they will see a huge decrease in visitors as well as a huge loss in revenue generation from advertisers. Advertisers will simply not be interested in advertising on a website seeing a decrease in users.
