Paywalls in SA inevitable: expert

why o why don't publishers and ISPs work together. Give me an option for uncapped internet from Afrihost for what I am paying plus R20 more a month for tons o content ...
 
You have to wonder if newspapers really understand today's market--especially the online one.

Put up a pay wall, people will just look elsewhere. You're deluded if you think that there isn't just another site offering free news a click away. Or that social media wouldn't just answer any questions.

You can spot the companies that can't adapt from a mile away...
 
I guess that's it for the Beeld, Burger, Volksblad, Sunday Times and BusinessDay then. Who the hell is going to pay for poor journalism when you can get poor journalism for free?

Case and point in the Boston bombings. Twitter informed me long before any new site got my attention. From there, a click away to youtube videos.

^ This. Someone should offer courses... How To Make Your Publication Utterly Irrelevant 101... Lots of business from these geniuses. Only problem I see is that the business would have no real longevity.

Boston Bombing - on Sky News within seconds.


So what exactly is there to pay for in an online news report??


The days of buying a newspaper because of the billboard heading are long gone.
 
Paying for content is a good thing, if the content is worth it. The problem with most news sites is that they're not doing original reporting or writing but just rewriting events from else where. The value of that sort of content is non existent.

Focus less on breaking news and more on providing insight and analysis.

Then South African content will die. Enjoy the paywalls guys. You gotta be a complete idiot to be suckered into that.

Google News is free. If I am going to spend my money on media content it will be Netflix or Hulu... not SABC1.

They can do it the afrikaners who have no choice (if the handful of afrikaans media publications formed a cartel), But thats about it. Paywall didnt work for the Wall Street Journal its not ganna work here.

I dont know who Anton Harber is, but man, its apparently easy to become an "expert" these days.
