Hi All,

Two issues that I need some help with please:
  • When I start-up my desktop PC I hear a electronically-sounding click towards the end of start-up. It only happens once and does not stop the start-up or have any influence on anything (that I can see). Any idea what this could be? I don't recall it always being there.
  • Also during start-up and sometimes afterwards (at any time) my computer slows down completely and it seems as if the HDD is searching for something (makes lots of whirrs and soft grks - :)) ... why does it do that
Thanks in advance
Vic

There's just too many 'causes' or 'reasons'.
It could be due to hardware, specific software, malware or even your OS.

Rather get a professional to sort it out.

No, not really.. it's more than likely a dying hard drive..

yup, only sounds i have heard are the odd click of a dying hard drive

BACKUP !!!!!!!!!!

There's no way you could tell for sure without looking at the issues.
HDD clicking is more than normal.

The speed dips could be anything really.
OP stated the clicking is new and not something that was there before.. add to that the freeze (not slowdown) OP describes along with the sounds, you have all the makings of a failing hard drive..

Check the SMART stats then and report back.

Windows 10 is infamous for doing exactly what the OP describes. There's a bunch of processes and services that take over disk usage.

It can be resolved.

Windows 10 is part of the POST process now..?

The OP said towards the end of startup.
This could be after logon.

I'm done playing here.
Go waste some money. It's the S.A way.

You are right, end of startup.. missed that part..

Still failing hard drive though..

thanks for the answers so far :)

I have 2 HDD on this machine. One is a 320Gb for the OS and programs and one is a 1Tb for storage (mostly photos and docs). I tried to disconnect the "storage" drive to check if the sound was still there but when I did that (I just pulled the 2 SATA cables out, when the PC was off) on restart the PC won't boot up ... looking for a "proper bootable device"

Any reason why?

I can record the start-up if required but it;s a PC so takes about 2-3 minutes to start ... that ok?

Why did you pull out two SATA cables..? Switch off PC, plug both back in and disconnect ONLY the power cable to the 1tb storage hard drive..

When I first read the thread title sounded like a Xhosa to English translation issue.

Go with @WAslayer's advice and try find the fault. From experience, this does sound like a failing hard drive. Good luck!
