Hi all.

So my computer decided to restart itself while I was browsing. Now it loads up until the Windows XP load screen, and it loads for about 3 minutes, and then decides to restart itself again.

I've tried to go into safe mode, and it loads a whole bunch of drivers, then freezes when it gets to one in \system32\drivers\mup.sys or something like that.

Any ideas?

Everytime i have had my machines get to that stage and stop it has meant a format reinstall, never managed to find a working work around yet :(

The computer ran CHKDSK itself, so I don't know with which variables

Do yourself a favour - XP disc, select Repair, and in console type CHKDSK /F or /R

This normally fixes the problem. Worth a try before a full format.

Try an XP repair.

Boot up with the cd as if you were going to format and re-install, then accept the terms and conditions and then the next screen should say that it has "already detected a version of windows, if you would like to continue the installation press blah, blah, If you would like to repair this installation, press blah"
Then press "blah" and it will copy over all the files from the windows folder. Don't worry, you won't lose any documents or any installed programs and stuff. I've done it before.

Sorry, I can't remember what keys you have to press, hence the "blah" ;)

F8 during startup, disable automatic restart, write down the BSOD error message. If it can go into safe mode but not normal that means: a driver/program/hardware that is not part of the core of necessary files/hardware for windows is fubar

Another solution that I once used on one of my previous pc's was to smash the thing to pieces and then go out and buy or steal another one! This method was quite successful, although I noticed that it usually requires a repeat performance every two years or so.

Byakuya, thanks for that advice, but I kinda need my pc...

* Update: It seems to be working but I'm getting errors related to Explorer, so tomorrow I'll just run repair. Thanks.

And disable the "automatic reboot" thing. It's super irritating. At least then you'll be able to get a better idea what is causing your system to BSOD
