On Wednesday night I played some CSS and when I exited everything was fine and I browsed the net a bit. I walked away and when I got back the PC was frozen. I then pressed the reboot button on the box and it rebooted and I could hear everything going but the signal didn't come through to the monitor. I then pressed the power button to switch it off whereafter it was totally dead.

I tried a direct power cable from the plug (instead of the one through the UPS) but no luck. The green light on the motherboard is lit but nothing is happening.

It is an Asus P8P67 MB
2500k Sandybridge CPU
8800GT GPU

Any advice on what I can try to look for?

I just hope it is not this whole SB mobo's carp hitting the fan.

I will be picking up another old PSU from a friend later to try.

One thing I did notice on the MB LED is that it has a flickering and is not 100% solid lit.

OP, I have almost the same board (Although mine is the EVO). You should have the same red LED's on the board indicating what the problem is. E.g. if it's the RAM, the one near the RAM slots lights up, if it's a boot device, the one near the chipset lights up, etc. Check if any LED's are staying red and check in the manual what they mean.

Also: what green light? They should all be red.. except the one on the RESET button, which I don't think the standard P8P67 has.

mmm, will check when I get home. I just quickly looked at it last night and saw the blinking green light....didn't notice any red one. But thanks for the tip to look for it in the manual <--- always consult the manual last :D

With the other PSU the green light (PWR standby) is solid whereas with my old PSU it is flickering, but it still does not start up. Is there a way to do something to trigger the startup on the motherboard? The reason I ask is to make sure if it is not the chassis power button that is also faulty

Yes, there is. If the board doesn't have a power button on it (which seems to be the case here), you can unplug the little wires going to the power button, and touch the 2 pins with a screwdriver or knife, with the power on. Just make sure you touch only those 2.
