PC died ...

Name NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti & Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000

Remove the driver using DDU, remove the card and see if the problem persists. If the problem goes away install the card again and install new gpu drivers. The dxgkrnl error could be gpu related.

Yeah the 10400 is cheaper, but hell no 12th gen while is costs more, the 12400 runs circles around it. Was considering getting a 10th gen as well, just so I could upgrade to windose 11, I will rather pay the extra as the performance difference between the 10th and 12th gen is pretty big enough between 25% and 31% faster.

Yeah, an i3-12100 kicks an i7-4970s ass in synthetic benchmarks.

Yeah, really stupid if you buy 10th or 11th gen now. Have a decent reason to upgrade to 12th gen now, as there is more then 60-70% performance difference between my CPU and the 12th gen version.

@Dolby your PC is more than good enough for what you want to do. If you are worried about the PSU then rather just replace the PSU with a new 850w good quality gold one (I chose that incase at a later stage you want a graphics card) that'll be silent and run for 10 years no worries. Format that old SSD and start again from fresh, and lastly add in another 8GB ram. Save you a ton of cash. And when you replace the PSU just take your pc to someone with an air compressor and blow out all the dust, like really clean it out. You're good to go!

oh the PC I'm using right now is ancient by modern standards but is super fast opening and doing anything, yes I have an old graphics card in it but still. Hey I can still play Red Dead Redemption 2 at great FPS.

Intel i5-2500k @ 3.3GHz <-- came out in 2011
8GB ram
SSD main operating C drive + normal old one for D drive
40" LED 4k screen
GTX 1060 6GB card

And my computer doesn't wait or hunt around for anything, super fast. But if it starts to lag after X amount of years, I format that C drive and start again fresh, back to tip top shape! And this PC is 10 years old plus!

This year should also see more games supporting 16gig ram min and games support disk streaming. I think you are right on the edge, windows 10 support also ends in 2025.

Yea mine seems fast enough - it was just the :

Grinding sound on PSU
Error on boot up, seemingly random
Video error - only happened twice

So it was becoming slightly problematic - but I'm on a tight budget, so I'll hang ten and do the tips described above. I have an old work laptop - but if we have a Covid spike, we'll need to work from home and in that case, I use my own PC rather than the work laptop

* Also was curious about the new OS update
