This is for a friend of mine. I'd appreciate your input ;)

He wants a pc to be able to play the latest games, a big enough screen to watch a movie or two and enough space for music and games and so on.

System needs to be full of all the bells and whistles.

I can do this myself to an extent, but I'm not that clued up with the new hardware out there.

I'd like to make this as simple as possible for me. If you suggest a piece of hardware, could you please link to the place where we would be able to source it from?

System needs to include Vista Ultimate, preferably ;)

Thanks for any help.

Thanks Henry. To be honest I don't know where to start bro.

I feel a bit bad doing this, it's as if I'm shoving it on the myadsl folks :p Thanks man!

Don't feel bad, the whole point of a forum is to help out. :D

I guess I can just pass on some advice I received in PM (not gonna reproduce the PM for fear of a 1 day ban )

An AMD 9850 Phenom with 4GB DDR800 RAM. A decent mobo would set you back 1-1.5k and the rest you can use on 2x500GB Seagates and a Dell 24"er..

Agreement wrt the HDD's and the Dell - that thing will be a beauty!

This 9850, who currently stocks them?

Comparing that to a Core 2 Duo or Quad Core Intel, taking into account pricing and performance, which is better? ;)

Indeed, within budget. Are these things going to put AMD back on the map then?

Not sure how it compares to the Intels but have a look at those reviews for an idea of performance.

Intel QuadCore Q9300 = R2588
ASUS P5K = R1185
Samsung 22" Wide (2232GW) = R2609
2 x 2GB DDR800 = R728
XFX 8800GT (512MB) = R2299
Seagate 500GB 32MB cache SATA-II = R929
Samsung SATA DVD Writer = R228

Total = R10566, which leaves you with R 2400 odd for a PSU,Chassis, Mouse and keyboard.

I'd recommend :
Chassis : Coolermaster CM690 - R826
PSU : Coolermaster Extreme Power 650Watt = R784
Mouse :
1* Razer Lachesis = R646
2* Microsoft Habu - R583
3* Logitech G5 SE - R721
Keyboard : Any cheap one, like this : Logitech Classic 200 - R124
Speakers : OK set : Logitech X-210 2.1 - R353
And Lastly, get a nice mousepad made for gaming : Razer Mantis Speed - R137

I found this very helpful,
Then add a bigger HDD
and Vista

Is the P45 chipset out yet? Its all over the techsites, but I dunno whether one can buy it yet.

Thanks a lot man, that looks like such a sweet system ;)
That is exactly the post I have been searching for. Good work :)
Thanks man, if anyone can better that, it would be great, but I doubt it :p

Feo, would you mind putting a rig together as Frag did on the Phenom CPU?

Please bro, if you have time ;)

wouldn't the intel be superior to the AMD, don't want to sound like a fanboi but everyone says the intel performs better so why would you settle for lower performance. . . Just what i heard.

I read through a few of those links feo posted. I'd just like to give my friend the option to choose which system he'd like.

If the Quad Core Intel outperforms the Phenom X4, then by all means I'd suggest he go for Intel ;)

Does it? Reviews are strange :p

Haha thanx guys :)

Yeah I really think that's the best buy for R10k - R15k...
And I think that's the best prices too, cept for maybe zones if you're near Durbz :)

Thanks Frag.

Let's say my friend buys the pc in two months time. Would I need to update those specs or not?
