Hi all, I need some expert knowledge!

One morning my PC did not want to boot up so I found out my SSD randomly failed! SSD was still under warranty so it was exchanged! Got new SSD, reinstalled Win8 Pro and everything seemed fine. BUT... there is always a but! On some occasions my pc would hang/freeze randomly. It does not freeze totally, mouse still moves and some programs still work fine but other programs would just not respond. There is no way recreate this, it just happens randomly! Once it has happened CTRL+SHIFT+ESC does not even open task manager, doing the WINDOWSKEY+R with "shutdown -r -t 00" just brings the screen to restarting and hangs there. I have to hit the manual reset!

I have run memtest86, no issues found. Does anybody have a clue as to what I should be looking out for? Maybe a program that can log if some device times out?

I have a
-I7 3820,
-16GB 4x4GB Corsair HyperX 1600,
-Intel DX79SI Motherboard,
-Corsair Force 3 120GB SSD
-Razor blackwidow keyboard (with supplied Synapse software)
-RAT7 mouse (with supplied software)
-MSI GTX680
-Corsair AX1200 PSU

Win8 is configured to update automatically so I always have the latest patches. Running AVG for antivirus. All my other pc's/laptops are fine so I want to rule out a virus or worm. Any ideas welcome!

Uninstall and use an AVG removal tool to remove left overs.

Get a proper antivirus.

Any antivirus recommendations? Never had any issues with AVG using it the last 9 years.

My preference is a bit off track to the rest, but I'd recommend Kaspersky (1) or ESET (2) if you can afford it.

Free antivirus I'd suggest Panda Cloud (Off track yes) it works for me without hassle. AVG is a resource hog and it slows everything down to a crawl.

For me there is an indication that it hangs on accessing SSD or some other boot device.

Hi There,
A bit too soon for me to say that it is the anti virus. Take it off and run the PC without any antivirus for a day or so to see if the problem still occurs. If it doesnt then it seems you will have found the cause of the problem.
As far as anti virus is concerned I use the free version of Avast and not had any issues and it has alerted of virus or possible infections.
Have used Eset as well on work machines and not had any issues.

Good luck

Tim

OP, have you tried using a hard drive to see if its the SSD again? Was your other one swapped out with the same model? Have you tried using other SATA ports on your board and is the SSD set to AHCI mode?

Check event viewer.

Create a custom view...24 hours errors & warnings only. Next time it bombs, memorize the time & then check event viewer wtf happened.

10 interweb points says its a driver issue or a SATA issue.

I doubt its AVG, unless there is some AVG/Win8 incompatibility that I don't know about.

How is your PC in safe mode? If the issue is the same, something is not right.

I also doubt if its AVG as I have 6 pcs running AVG free with Win8 pro without any issues.

Thanks for all the feedback. The problem with the freezing is it'll happen maybe once in 4 hours or so. So running in safe mode is not an option as I need to work.

The SSD was swopped out for the same model Corsair Force 3. I've checked Corsair's website, my batch does not have any known issues, I am connecting it to the onboard 6Gbps SATA, configured as AHCI. I will definitely have an eye on the event viewer to check the history when this happens again.

I've been told to watch the "Disk Queue length" in resource monitor, if the queue starts picking up its the sata port, ssd or driver me thinks!

If I find the bastard I'll let you guys know!

Be thankful for that. 4 hr issues are much easier to troubleshoot that 80 hr issues.

Sounds like a wild goose chase to me tbh. Or at the very least inefficient. If the queue length shoots skyhigh you'll get an event viewer error anyway because something will time out.

oh and you can delete double posts via the edit function. ;)
