I have someone who is moving to Oz for a year or so.

Can anyone advise whether he would be better of buying a pc here and taking it with him or are pc hardware prices cheaper over there ?

Its about the same... it might be slighlty cheaper there, but it depends on the exchange rate (AUD$:R) on the day.

Exchange rate has gone up quite a bit.

If he's earning OZ dollars, then perhaps buy one there.

If he's earning OZ dollars and the exchange rate has gone up then buy here. His dollars will be worth more Rands.

I know someone who moved recently, I don't know the detail but he ended up shipping his one across with his stuff.

If u earning oz dollars then it would be best to buy there.. One thing which does make it cheaper is you do get nice specials. Eg Dell stuff with coupons if i remeber correctly.

I remember one deal a while ago(a few years) where u could get a dell 30 inch, and a free 7800 gtx for 1800 aus dollars or something, i may not be remebering right. But a free top of the range graphics card is not a bad freebie.

If u going mac, then dont bother , macs are very expensive in aus.

The average salary in aus is 39000 aus dollars. It can quite easily be much higher than that. Professionals can earn a 100 000.

That would mean u could buy a dell 27 inch for about a weeks work, depending on salary. I dont think the average south african could do that.

Also for note with Oz is you can import anything from the States etc and if its under $AUD1000(approx R7300) you get charged NO TAX on it..... unlike here where their pretty sharp wanting their 14% VAT in my experiences.

Theres stores etc listed in the "PC Hardware" section of this Oz Broadband forum if anyone wants to search out stores for prices etc.....

This outfit here used to be ok re prices and probably ok for comparison(their complete price list link is 3 over from the "home" link)
