Hi all im going to be getting inheriting a pc from from my uncle soon and i would like to know what I would have to upgrade to be able to play Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3. Not on the highest settings just reasonable graphics.
Here's the specs,

Intel G41 mobo
Intel core 2 quad 2.6ghz
4GB kingston RAM
1tb hdd
300W Psu
Nvidia 8400GS 512MB
Win 7 professional

I don't want to spend more than R2000

Thanks in advance. :D

I'd upgrade ...

The RAM, GPU, PSU, CPU and motherboard.

the rest should be ok ...

[I really do apologise for that, but it just seemed so fitting ...]

Don't have the games but I reckon your bottleneck will be GPU then RAM then CPU]

PSU is not going to make a performance difference - it should help with stability though.

GPU is probably the single thing that will make the most difference, but I would up the RAM as well, it's cheap enough now.

So if this was me: I would probably buy the best GPU I can afford, up the RAM to 8GB and then start saving for a full upgrade in a year or so.

It'd have to be... PSU and GPU. There is a small chance you can get away with not upgrading the PSU, but its going to be so marginal its not even funny

Speccing components now
There really is no need to upgrade everything as another poster said. But there IS a need to upgrade the PSU

edit
You're looking at a CX430 for the PSU (R500)
And at least a HD6850 (R1700). If you dont mind going second hand I'm sure you could up that to a HD6870/GTX560Ti
Do you know the exact model number of the mobo?

I'm sure you can get a reasonable GPU for say R1500 and PSU for R500.

Maybe a HD6770 and Corsair 430w should work. If you lucky you can squeeze a HD6790 in... didn't really check the prices lately.

Check my edit further up
The PSU I would like to recommend corsair because they are solid units
GPU - you can pick the brand, it does not matter, just get the right model as stated above

Shops choose from: Landmarkpc, wootware, Takealot, prophecy, sybaritic etcetc
Second hand carbonite forum is a good bet

I'd strongly recommend at least HD68xx.
The 6750 will run BF3 though I'm sure, with quite a few settings turned low however. The 6850 gives roughly 50% more frames, so its worth the roughly 50% more cost (brand new).

Just get a bigger psu and gpu and you should be fine. 4gb ram should be enough but you can get extra 4gb for very cheap. Just make sure the win7 is 64 bit not 32bit otherwise the extra 4gb ram not going to help you.

That is sound advice. Make sure it is 64bit, then upgrade the memory.

Any luck on the exact motherboard model?

Im going to phone now let you now a little later about the motherboard.

Once again thanks for the advice and help. :D

4 gig ram is more that sufficient. So is Windows 7/300w Psu/1 tb HDD/Intel Processor.

Maybe you will run into problems with your graphics card. Dude with 2 grand ... man
