I hope this is in the right sub-forum, if not, please advise...

My ancient pc won't switch on anymore and I want to take it to someone to check it out and let me know what's wrong with it. I'm in the Cape Town CBD.

I'm guessing it's the graphics card or ram that's just reached end of life and needs replacing but I don't have any spares to check with...

Any recommendations?
Feel free to pm me or email me at my username @ Gmail dot com.

The only thing that ever stopped working on my old computer was the power supply. It used to be fairly easy to replace it yourself if you can still get the part.

Thanks but I'm in CT, was hoping to not to have to travel so far.

Is there anyone on the forum who repairs pc's that I can take my machine to?

ill send you a pm.. im not in the CBD but not in somerset west at least..

Do you hear a series of beeps when you turn the computer on?

If it doesn't turn on at all, I would assume its the PSU. If you have an extra PSU, try plugging that in. If still nothing then it's probably the mobo.

If it does power on but no display, try connecting to onboard graphics if you have.

How old is the PC/motherboard? Do you know the motherboard model?
I recently tried to fix a PC for someone but the power caps close to the CPU were dated and the next thing I knew... Sparks and the smell of burnt motherboard everywhere...

I'm not sure exactly how old the machine/motherboard is. It's an Asus p5k motherboard and it has no on board display adapter.

Did they blame you for it?

They don't know about it yet :p
But the machine only switched on for 1 second on every attempt, he knows about this.
I tried again after he left my house and this is when the burnout happened.

Anyway, take everything from out of the case and place the motherboard on an anti static surface.

ONLY plug the PSU and 1 stick of ram into the motherboard.

Locate the power pins and use a butter knife to touch the 2 power pins.
If it works, do it a couple more times for sanities sake.
If it doesn't... then get someone to help you out with spare parts to test further...

All in all, it's a 775 motherboard so I'll probably give such a machine away for free.

I'm just trying to keep it going till I find a laptop I'm happy to purchase. Haven't found something ideal yet.
