Hi all, I think my PSU requires repairing. I believe the capacitor may have blown as I hear a loud "pop" and the PC won't turn on at all.

I inspected the motherboard and nothing seems to be out of the ordinary, so I presume it must be the PSU. It's a 1000w PSU and would prepare to repair rather than buy a new one.

Is there any recommendations on those offering essential IT services during lockdown and can do call-outs? Or I am also an essential worker and can drop this off during any of my work sites. I have urgent information on there that needs to be accessed, so pretty desperate.

Wootware, Rebeltech and titan-ice all should be able to assist.

I doubt any of them do repairs, they handle warranty claims.

If your psu is out of warranty buy a new one as I doubt you will find a specialist board level repair place open and then there's the issue of financial viability.

Why do you have a 1kW psu?

Just buy a new power unit and replace.

I think I'll have to buy new one. Bought the PSU a while back and I've got Cards in Crossfire and tons of hard drives, ssd etc. And other devices connected so hence the decision for 1000w. Are they delivering?

Curious, what brand is it?

The loud pop would most likely be the mains fuse blowing, caps normally just pop up a bit, they only go off like firecrackers when they get put in the wrong way. Might be wrong, easiest way is to eyeball it - if you see a badly expanded cap, that may be it. if you check the mains fuse and its black or in the case its no a glass type, but is open circuit... then not good news - Chances are the Switching circuit is damaged and you are going to need someone that knows their stuff

Thanks will check and revert tomorrow. What you reckon if that's the case, just buy a new one?

Okay so Titan-Ice is open and are essential workers. My PSU is fine, it is believed the motherboard is blown. AM3 board so I'll have to get it replaced. With the RAM, GPU and CPU.

Motherboard... that could be good news, motherboards are fixable, one of the things I do

What are the details? Asus M4A79 perhaps, FX6300 CPU
