I'm starting to look for my hardware for next year at university but i'm not sure if there are any special requirements for computer engineering. If there is can someone tell me what it is if there is none i will appreciate some suggestions.

Yes, the following are the most important you will need to succeed:

1) >1 A4 hardcover book.
2) >1 ballpoint pen.
3) Determination
4) Dedication
5) NO social life for ~4 years. (Take note: Marks and Social life are inversly connected).

If you follow the above you will have all you need to be successful in your endeavours.
:)

Luckily I already have no social life so that wont change much, but for now i need to spend my dads money on a computer.

+100

Except you CAN have a social life, AFTER you've finished your work.
(Good luck with that)

To be honest, Campus PC's are all you need. (as a bare minimum)

But it helps alot having your own PC, even if you'll be stayin close to campus.

Are you stayin in Res? and where you gonna study?

Ok so there is no special stuff needed. Im gonna stay in a flat witch im sharing with a friend, will be in Pretoria.

mostly, just buy a massive harddrive. Some of the new programs they want you to use will own harddrive space... or so I've hear...

And as for social life... you get tons of it after those 4 years because you get a decent salary, and must be a smarty ;). But yeah, get used to ONLY going out once a week in the HOLIDAYS :p

Didn't you like...just finish matric? That hardly makes you an authority on what engineering students go through.

As for system specs, generally you don't need something crazy for actual work. You'll want at least a C2D, which honestly is the minimum on any PC these days, and you'll be wanting at least 2GB RAM.
Hard drive space? 1tb drives are really cheap, but I'd get two and run them in RAID1, just in case one goes wrong end up and you lose all your stuff.
In short, you don't need anything special. A system with specs to run Win7 nicely will actually be overkill for anything you'll be using.

Ps. Screen! Get at least a 23". Software suites these days aren't exactly frugal when it comes to using desktop real estate, so one or even two full HD screens will be most welcome.

I7-965 Intel
16 GIG DDR3
Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit
1Tb HDD
Dual GTX295's
T260 Samsung
Logitech Z5500
MX Revolution Mouse
Logitech Dinovo Edge Keyboard
X-Fi Elite pro sound card (if you bored and intend making some music)

i think u should be ok :)

seriously ... the most entry level PC money can buy will be more than ok

EDIT: i did engineering electrical at Wits Uni, very tough ... finished with decent marks through the years ... I had not social life ... some people can wing it,, mix social and work ... but i am not a genius like some people i know, so had to work hard ...

Fixed :)

I get this feeling that the OP would LIKE to need a high-end machine ;) Unless you're doing hardcore CAD work you frankly don't need a behemoth, and even then you can get by fine with a entry-level desktop.
Just remember what I said: Lots of screen real estate and a backup solution is important, other than that a basic C2D system will be fine.

true, I'm just gonna disappear then

I would love to have a monster of a pc but unfortunately its not going to happen because of budget constraints. It seems that i have +- R6000 for the CPU, motherboard, ram and power supply and maybe a new case because mine is getting really old now.

You don't need a high speced machine. I got through my first year with a P4 (4 years ago) and things haven't changed much in terms of the things they ask you to do Simulations are mostly 2D also. Most of your work will be done at campus anyway. Just a few documents and programs that you'll have to work with at home.

If you're in pretoria, there's a high chance of a social life ...if you're not looking at passing with good marks. I have a couple of friends studying computer engineering at tuks and all they end up doing is going out most nights :)
