PC restarts while playing games

Ok.

PC just restarted with the other module in. So pc restarts when both ram modules are in and when just one of them is in. From what I can see it is not overheating (CPU was at aout 35 and GPU at about 50 when restarts occured)

Will definitely give memtest a go.

Thanks kuga. Downloading OCCT now. WIll give it a run and upload the results. Also pc isn't overclocked at all. Everything is at stock vaults.

What psu do you have and what's the rest of your rig consist of?

i have a feeling it's a psu problem. My gpu also "powers off" randomly i.e. The fan stops spinning and the screen goes black this is because of my crappy PSU

That would be my guess as well.

Unfortunately I don't have a 700w or higher psu lying around otherwise I would be using it :(

Don't necessarily need a 700w PSU....just a good 500w should suffice. That said...the problem might be from something else. Tried to have a look for your PSU's specs but I couldn't find anything...not even on Isonics own site.

I wonder if the vCore fluctuating like that has anything to do with it? As soon as the CPU is under load, the vCore drops a bit. Is that normal ? I know nothing about vCores and such :P

Yeah. Well it is almost 2 years old now. However before I get a new psu I want to be 110% sure it is the psu. I don't want to go out and buy a new psu and find out my pc still restarts.

Should I try setting the vCore at a fixed value in my bios?

Hi all.

I have a rather irritating problem atm. Whenever I play a game my PC restarts. Sometimes I can play for an hour without it restarting and other times I'll play for 5 minutes and my PC restarts. I have tried numerous OS (XP, vista, 7) and my PC has restarted in all of them.

I'm pretty sure it's the graphics card but I'm not 100% sure. I have a 4870 and I've checked the temps which are in the 40's so I know it's not overheating. My PC is absolutely fine when I'm on my desktop, listening to music, watching a movie etc. When my PC restarts then screen goes blank and the graphics card fan turns down.

Any suggestions?
i'll take good bet its the gpu, i'll even call it and say its related to the powerplay bugs.

what happens when you stick an other gpu in ?

ati 4850 revisted... powerplay or bios bugs - http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=169370
related all in one - http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=31&threadid=2206426

you might not get the lines, but quick result for me was to play something really gpu in tensive like dead space. i did fix it in the end with replace it with a 260gtx which instantly the issues stopped.

Download Prime95 and stresstest your CPU and RAM for a few hours, should tell you whether the problem lies with your CPU/RAM or GPU.

i would rather suggest as i said try the same things with another gpu first. hec maybe even clean the case out if its dirty.

If he has access to a different GPU to test with, by all means. If he doesn't, I stand by my original suggestion.

Unfortunately I don't have a spare gpu lying around but I will try and get hold of one.

Cleaned out my case about a month ago so it is relatively clean. Will try Prime95 tonight.

OCCT is a better program imo. Also if you have a duel core CPU, download Orthos. It's basically Prime95 but made for duel cores whereas Prime95 is for single core CPU's only.

What does you cpu temp say in the bios just as a matter of interest, sometimes the core series temp monitors for windows have no idea what temp it is.

Like my cpu, it gets reported at over 50 and when i stress it jumps to over 70 yet in the bios it's 22.

Yea run prime95 over night and ensure your testing cpu and memory with it. Then download 3dmark if you can.

Did you try both memory sticks or just one?
