Hi, I work for a company that has about 500+ PCs connected to a WAN by cable. Recently there has ben a spate of thefts where PCs are being removed. Is there some way of using the WAN/LAN to monitor when a PC is disconnected from the Network? I was thinking of setting all PCs to wake on lan then when it is physically disconnected from the lan, I want to be able to see that a workstation ID No so and so has been disconnected so possible be able to track theft. Is this possibel and does anyone know of appropriate software. Thank you.

TonyA - there is an add-on card that'll start screaming as soon as the PC is manhandled. Don't know if you'll want to look at that as well.

Otherwise, your best bet would be to rawlbolt the PC to the floor.

If the PCs are switched on, it should be easy software to develop - basically, each PC calls home (to a server or your machine or whatever) every few seconds. Then, when one is disconnected, the server application will await the call but won't receive anything - and it can then raise the alarm.

If the PCs are switched off, however, I can't see how you can do it. The alarm will also go off when switching off the PC, so it wouldn't really work.

Looks like you need to setup some surveilance there, have a look at Zoneminder youcan setup multiple cameras/web cams and does recording when triggered by movement http://www.zoneminder.com/wiki/index.php/Contents

Otherwise you need to setup a bait PC which will shock the sh+t out of the person who picks it up. "but not kill them !"

Have a look at the following

http://www.lookatlan.com

This will discover all the PC's on the LAN and keep Pinging them at set intervals. So you will notice if one is no longer there.

Otherwise you need to look as something like Nagios which will monitor all IP's and report on events. Bit more work to setup and total overkill if you just want to check PC's
