I have been a subscriber to iBurst's McAfee PC Security Suite since last year.

It is downloaded and installed by clicking on a link provided by iBurst.

From time to time, the system ceases to update automatically and it advises the user to uninstall and then reinstall the system.

On April 20, the reinstall did not execute correctly, and consequently, I was without the necessary protection. I did succeed in installing a trial version directly from McAfee's website, but this will expire on May 19. The correctly functioning link is not yet available from iBurst.

I have today cancelled my subscription to the iBurst security suite because I have not been able to reinstall it using any linkage from iBurst, and it is not known when this will be possible.

Would forumites please advise what suite I could use to replace what I have been using up to now, preferably free!

Thanks for any good advice.

Your best bet is avast.

Spent time as a tech and no other package got rid of viruses like it did, not to mention it's boot-time scan is one spiffy little feature.

I'm actually running Avast! on my own pc, it is a wonderful Antivirus package. I haven't had a problem since I loaded it ;) I find it fast as well, scanning, start up ,whole whoot and toot :D :p

I'm running Vista, so I don't really need a firewall or antispyware, I've got Avast Pro, I don't think it has a firewall or antispyware ;)

1.Delete the iBurst crap!

2.First go here:
Windows Live PC Health & Safety Test or here Symantec Virus Scanning - If no viruses are found continue with step 3, however if any viruses / spyware / malware are found, STOP – move the user data to another external drive and disconnect it and obtain lost Windows and Office keys with Jelly Bean, make pint out for later use. Format the OS hard drive (there is no other option!), reinstall WinXP ( incl. updates & disable automatic updates) and legal Programme files - those with serial keys only (excluding downloaded and free applications), then follow step 3 & 4 then scan the external data drive as per step 2 and confirm by manually locating & deleting remaining viruses, run the scan again and if the scan delivers a clean bill of health copy the user data from the external drive back onto the drive that contains the OS.

3.then go here Download - Avira Antivir Personal Free Edition 4.and then go here Download - Zone Alarm Free Firewall Protection

Your PC should be protected to double check go here Free Port Scan and here
Free Port Tester and / or here Free Symantec Port & Virus Scan

To confirm that you have done the right thing, go here CNet Forum - Firewall Comparison and here PC Magazine - Anti Virus Comparison

If you find XP to be sluggish, improve the performance by following some of these steps Tweak XP If you are unsure about the safety of any step, verify it here Search Microsoft.com

PS. The complete process might take 8 hours or more if viruses are found.

Great work

Michael,
You have done a magnificent job of taking your first post with all the details and making it user friendly after comprehensive edit. This is a good example of making technicalities accessible to the uninitiated.

Once I had installed Avira antivirus, it would not update to the latest av files. I tried several times, but it would not update. I uninstalled it and then installed Avast which updated successfully.

I now have firewall, automatic updates and antivirus on this PC which has both ADSL and iBurst on it.

My Netgear G834Gv3 has firewall protection on ADSL, and I have the forgoing on iBurst. I hope this will suffice.

I have spent ±R7000 on data recovery due to virus activity and hard disk failure in the last few months. I believe that I now have reasonable protection against virus invasion, and 100% backup protection against disk failure.

Why is it that IT professionals neglect their own backup procedures whilst beating their clients over their heads and ensuring that they are protected?

Thanks again for the help.

LOL. why does a builders house fall apart... Glad you got sorted.

M

EDIT: You might want to consider investing in one of these, (FVS124G) far more secure than a software firewall and retail cost in Cape Town is around R 1 428 Ex VAT.

We're sorry. This version of the Windows Live OneCare safety scanner doesn't work with your Web browser or operating system.
I'm using WinXPSP2 and FF2003 .. If they think I'm going to change to IE, they can go fish!!

8 Hours!!! WTF> Apple users must be laughing their heads off.<

It's a Microsoft product, so you have no choice (Microsoft's idea of keeping control over the browser war) - it is loaded on your Win based system anyway, just use it to run Live or you could use Maxton (far more features that are easily configured to suit the user’s preferences) - but be aware it has the same security flaws as IE, as it is based on the same code.

The 8 Hrs I'm referring to is - The time it takes for moving data back and forth and formatting the drives and reinstalling the system OS, driver files, programme files, user prefs, etc. - MAC is about the same hours, depending on the amount of data... however there are far fewer viruses out there that target MAC's OS, but that will change when they become more popular - inherently a MAC's security flaws are far worse than that of Windows based systems!

Oops! :o

Wasn’t my intent really, really… Just wanted to make a comparison – regarding security flaws, to enlighten the Win user above.

I will rephrase: Any OS that connects to other systems, by whatever means is vulnerable to security risks – this is the nature of connectivity.
