Hi MyBBs

I have a (older) tower with a amd phenom 9550 quad-core processor on a MSI K9N6PGM2-V2 mobo running 4gb ram. Whenever I boot it up, it runs fine up to the point it displays "Starting Windows", then the whole thing shuts down, as if power was pulled. It runs BIOS checks fine, and I have replaced the PSU with another (operational) unit, but the same happens.

I tried booting with a Bootable flash, it loads the Windows files, then after "Starting Windows", it shuts down.

Any thoughts?

Did you disconnect the hard disk cables before attempting this? Sounds like it's still booting off the hard disk instead of the flash drive.
 
Hi all. I tried a couple of the suggestions, and loaded with a Ubuntu disk. It got up to the purple screen with the "Keyboard = Accessibility" logo, the shut down again. So next step is to shove another hard drive in there. **Fingers Crossed**

If booting off the live disc doesn't work, it's not the HDD.
You have to start going through all the parts. You've already gone through the PSU, do you have onboard graphics? If you do, try using a proper graphics card. Try and rule out as many parts as possible.
Also take the above suggestion into account, your PC will switch off if it is overheating, I was forced to install a new intake fan due to bad circulation in one of my desktops and the machine shutting down instantly to preserve itself from the heat.
Have you cleaned out your desktop recently?
 
I noticed the rear chassis fan is not turning. The CPU fan is turning, and I put fresh thermal paste on it, just to make sure.
I'll check the temp in BIOS...

Check if the power button breaks after make. If it is sticky and does not break the PC will start and after a short while switch off. A squirt of Q20 should do the trick.

Never heard of that one before, going to remember that.

Windows 10?
I get the same thing occasionally except it restarts and happens again. I found the cause to be irq_not_less_than_or_equal
Driver in question is the cmedia audio driver

Check the windows logs for errors

If the live disc also doesn't work, it isn't windows at fault.
 
It smells to me a bad joint on the motherboard. It could be poor cleaning from the chemicals after etching tracks or BGA chip soldering. Remove motherboard from a case, reduce tension.
 
So i've tried with Ubuntu and the same happened. I cleaned the CPU fan and created an alternative power source (as opposed to the onboard adapter) for the chassis fan, so that works now. And the thing still shuts off at exactly the same place.

So normally, at this stage I would just let the box go, as it is a spare, but im thinking a Quad Core should not go wasted...
