Pc turning off when gaming? It's killing me :(

Hi everyone,
I have a new rig that looks as follows:

Intel Q9400 2.66 GHz Quad
Intel DG45ID mobo
3GB DDR2 800 RAM
Samsung Syncmaster 2333SW LCD
Asus Ati HD 4890 1GB DDR5 GPU
Vantec Ion2+ 520Watt PSU
Nothing Overclocked or anything like that

Whenever i play a game like sims3 or GTA4 for about 5/10 minutes or so my monitor goes black (seemingly standby mode) and then my PC completely turns off by itslef....
Now originally when i bought the PC the PSU wasnt good enough so i got a new one (the vantec) problem solved, then it was overheating, so i got a better fan...Now there is no overheating but this is happening, I had BSOD a few times before installing Windows 7 Pro 64 bit...
A few weeks ago i played anything without worries for as long as i wanted, but all of a sudden ive got this horrible problem,.... WHat to do , im desperate now :(
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Note: my PC never turns off unless im playing a game, it can be on forever.

Its definitely not overheating, the case and components are not hot at all...
 
Every time I have experienced this it has been a faulty PSU. Try swop it and see. The rated Wattage is not always the actual Wattage as well.

It used to be either when playing a game, or as soon as the DVD drive started spinning up when i popped a disc in.

That would be very upsetting seeing as i was told by multiple users on this forum that this particular (recommended) PSU will support the 4890 fine...
I will try a better one if i can get old of one.:(
 
dont really know the card, but some of them have separate power plugs on the card itself, worth a check to make sure its hooked up?
 
Something else to try - unplug components like the dvd-rom drive or extra hard drives and see if it helps. If it does help, means you need a bigger PSU

It may well be sufficient size PSU, but it also may have a fault...so its worth trying another spare PSU. If u can borrow one for a check. If it works fine with another PSU of same size, you should then take your one back to where u bought it and say it may be faulty. Get them to test it there
 
erm, if a chip is overheating the case wouldnt :) its not a vacuum cleaner :)

Try another PSU, or open her up, put a desktop/pedestal fan right there on full power and play. if it lasts longer, or doesnt happen you definitely have a heat problem.
 
Its the PSU... I had the same problem with my PC.. would randomly turn itself off while playing games even though i had unplugged various components and cleaned it out a few times..

Took it to a pc shop, fitted a store PSU and it worked fine every time.. Bought a new PSU and it has not happened since.

That seems to be the likely reason but then how is it possible that a few weeks ago i could play (on the exact same system and PSU) without end?

Because **** tend to break? :rolleyes:

Check your fans, usually the first to go, and when I say check them I don't mean "check to see if they turning just now". I had a problem with a PC like that and it turned out the fan would stop working as soon as the CPU got hot
 
what about the battery of the mb? maybe it needs a new one... have you checked your systems voltage?
 
Overheating will lock the system up, check another PSU, maybe yours got damaged or has reached the end of its life?
 
mine was the same... would turn itself off every time for a few days, then all of a sudden work fine for a month with no problems...

Changed the PSU more than 6 months ago and not a problem since

Replaced PSU, replaced fan, the only thing i noticed is that the GPU is steaming hot inside (the golden pipe like things under the 4890, not sure what theyre called) they are very hot though, that actual board and transisters arent so hot htough
