Thinking of upgrading...

Pricewise these 2 cpu's are more or less the same but which one would be a better choice. I know the latest is the Core 2 Duos. What would you people recommend:
Intel® Pentium® D 945 3400 2 x 2048K 800FSB* S775 EM64T
or
Intel® Core™2 Duo 6300 1.86GHz 2048K 1066FSB* S775

*FSB noted

Comments would be appreciated.

If you can stretch you budget the one to go for is the E6600 - 4MB cache.
Otherwise pick any Core 2 over the "same speed" dual core.

....or wait a few months untill the quad cores get here ;)

Intel® Core™2 Duo 6300 1.86GHz 2048K 1066FSB* S775 would be the better of the two chips. Its slower overall but more stable. Its also newer tech and would support more over clocking. Its based on Intels Core Duo Technology which means its better in design than the standard Dual core and overall the better choice given the options.

In fact, overall the Core 2 Duo faster, just in encoding situations where the raw GHz matters is the Pentium D faster...

The Core2Duo rocks!

No point in getting the Pentium D. But check that your motherboard supports it.

ok for a little more get the E6400 thats the one im getting and if you wanna oc it you can reach 2.8 without a sweet... and at 2.8 it will run stable and best of all it will do a poo on amd's am2 5000+ and even the fx 62!!! now thats bang for the buck

I'd take even the Core Duo (if it was available for an ordinary board) over any Pentium 4 based chip.

Thanks guys - you have convinced me to get the Core 2 Duo rather.
I have to u/grade the mobo anyway - even for the pentium D.
