PC Upgrade question

I take it your at UCT or some large institution in CT with lots of other people - see how many orders you can get for computers\laptops\hardware and you can work off your pc doing nothing really. For every sale that comes through you i'll give you a % you can take it cash or in hardware.

You could earn money from hosting referals... we'll give you a percentage of monthly revenue from your referrals :D

If you're good, between Person and us, you'll have a top of the range machine in no time (at least no longer than 5 - 10 years :p)

Thing is, i have just installed a fresh copy of windows and that doesnt seem to have done anything. Didnt mention that earlier...

If you didn't reformat the partition then you're probably still carrying the unhappinesses. Suggest that if you haven't done so already, reinstall into a reformatted ntfs partition and reinstall all apps. Then check for service packs for everything installed.

Spread you swap space across the 2 drives.

Did I mention that you should make a backup of your data first? Oops.

If none of that works, then think about hardware upgardes.

Definately get a new graphics card if you are looking for one single piece of hardware to buy. That chip is still fine especially if it is the barton core version.
I would reccomend a 6600GT, you can get them for R1150 at the cheapest. Will run all those latest games fine even with the rest of your system.

R1150, thats cheap, link pls?

My appologies for the previous post as mentioned to luke I am a little sick today and didnt read your post very well. :D

No problem - was just having a little fun! :) Hope you're feeling better!

Well its just the standard PSU that came with the case when i got the PC. 300W if i am not mistaken...

Have two hard drives, a cdburner, dvd drive and like a side fan thing...My PC is almost always on. Downloading, trying to make use of the uncapped local while it lasts :-)

U think that could be a cause for concern?

your GPU and frontside bus are your biggest bottlenecks, cd burning errors can only relate to cd burning software corrupted or needs updating, cd firmware needs updating, compatability problems with certain cd media and many others.

Howzit. My PC is more than two years old but i cant afford to buy a new one right now...poor student i am and u should see varsity's fees this year- crazy!

Anyway, i am wondering if there is anything that i can swopout/replace that will increase performance and/or stability...

I am running an

AMD Athlon 2500 @1.83mhz
Chaintech Summit 7NJL3 mobo
1 gig DDR400 RAM (2 x 512MB)
2 x 80 gig western digital hdd
ATI Radeon 9250 128MB graphics card

Windows XP Professional

ATM i cannot write a CD and do other stuff at the same time as it either ends in some kind of crash or a CD with errors on it. I can get some more RAM for a resonable price- will this help at all?

Playing new games such as NFS or SWAT4 or FIFA2006 causes random crashes which i have put down to the graphics card overheating...Is there a cheap replacement that would allow me to play some of the latest games at least?

Is there anything i can do without replacing the CPU and the mobo to improve things performance and stability-wise?

Any help would be appreciated

Hello guys. I am back.

Same PC I have, starting to feel a bit old and slow it is...

I am still saving up towards first of all a laptop and then a new PC so that will be a while coming...

What i want to know is if you guys reckon that throwing a bot of cheap DDR400 RAM at my PC so long would help speed things up a little? Basically looking to give my PC a cheap makeover( I mean cheap) that will keep it running nicely while I get saving towards a newer shiny model...

Or anything else? Or should i just wait?

Add another gig ram but i think it is high time for an upgrade especially if you want to play some of the newer games :p

Yeah that chip is a bit slow but I think its the graphics card thats hampering you the most. Assuming thats still an AGP setup, look at a 6600GT or 6800 if you want to be a bit more s****ier, should make the world of difference.

Indeed, i agree! :p I don't need to play games just now. Can wait till the upgrade...But I thought RAM might be a nice stopgap to generally improve performance...

s****ier?

Just back from canal walk. Cheapest price i could find on 512MB DDR400 RAM was R499 which was at Incredible Corruption of all places. Other two shops where more than R600. I thought RAM was sposed to have come down in price?!

*edit. Found some cheap sticks on DigitalPlanet for like R350 ...Worth it?

i dunno if another gig of ram is going to speed that pc up hey

nope ram has sky rocketed over the last 4-5 months

rather keep the money for ddr 2 when u upgrade

I was hoping it was still down like it was a while back. Now I am also not sure it is going to be worth it for the performance benefit I will derive.

it wont be

1 gig is fine for your pc

its a very low end pc now so ram aint going to help it along :(

maybe buy a pc from a place that you can pay off :)
