Pc upgrade

Tx for all the input.

I am still happy with my GFX so not looking at upgrading it.
I got a 460 W PSU atm and Gigabyte G-Power Air Cooling unit.

AMD Phenom II 940 3.0Ghz Quad-Core CPU - Socket AM2+ R 3,171

Asus AMD M3A78-T Motherboard - Socket AM2+ R 1,863

Corsair XMS2 DHX Technology Memory - DDR2-800MHz - 4GB Kit R 1,017

Total: R6051

I recommend the Quad. You'll only get a small boost from going to the 4830. Actually you'll get a small boost anyway, because at the moment your cpu is a bottleneck.

How good are AMD's these days i had one long ago but got a lot of headache's from it and after i switched to intel it went a lot better.

I love mine and got it for a bargain... :p I can finally run GTA4 smooth with all the settings as high as it allows me(gpu only has 512mb :()

Beautifully. All the phenomIIs are 45nm. On air they oc to about 3.8Ghz. On water you can get over 4.0Ghz.

If you wanna save some cash. Get Cpu from the first build, but the mobo from the second. A 2.8tri will last you ages. Oh and get the cooler master hyper tx2 cooler.

here is my 2 cents, and dont flame me please Im not an expert! :)

I was always an AMD fan, from the start I was scolded for supporting their AMD K6-2!! :) All my mates had Intel, and honestly Im pretty sure my PC was faster than all of theirs

Up until recently I was still an AMD fan, until the E series (currently own the E8200) came out and blew AMD right out of the water (well according to the acticles I read anyway). I reluctantly moved over to Intel, and it was one of the best moves I ever made.

What confirms this for me, is that AMD have only recently moved over to 45nm, which is what my E8200 was when I bought it over 2 YEARS ago!

So these days Intel has the Core2 Quad Q9650 for about R4200 and AMD have their Quad Core 940 Black Edition for about R3100, but Intel have already moved into the new generation, the i7... AMD has what on the same level? The Phenom 2?

So I recon stick with Intel... seems like they have the edge right now, IMO of course.

anyways, read this I found it quite helpful

Same here although I started with a K6. Was never a fanboy but looked at bang for buck. The first Intel CPU I got is my present Q6600.

No one knows what the future holds, my next cpu might be a AMD again. I'm not very brand loyal when it comes to CPUs.

I'm currently looking at getting myself a ARM processor developer board to build a low power NAS/Torrent box. The board & cpu probably only uses about 5W.
