A 16x will work in a 1x slot if it's an open ended slot. If it's closed you will need to make the 1x slot open ended. It's just plastic. Not eletricals.

have done it before on a closed slot. I tried to cut it but it didn't work(was taking too long) so I used a soldering iron to burn/melt away the back of the slot! Either way cutting or burning it you have to be very careful not to damage the board. Do it at your own risk
