Pencil modding 4850, any tried it ?

It worked with the old Intel Pentium II's lol...

Overclock with a pencil stroke, back in the good ol' days

I would never do something like that with such an expensive GPU, asking for trouble

saw this mod when i was looking for

ati game crash vertical lines, which turns out to be on the first generation ati 48xxx's and their bioses; power play being enabled having the card run at variable speeds causing the issues....

i'm up for it; just need a resistance meter first :)

Awesome! Will try it this weekend :D :D :D

Awesome! can't wait to see the before and after pics :p

maybe have somebody record you when you switch it on for the first time as well, you never know, it could make an awesome youtube vid (And possibly bring in millions of theoretical dollars!)

Yes, And There's no need to poke it with a knife as clearly, the mod works as you had vGPU at the figures you were looking for. The change in voltage was likely just caused by loose pencil flakes. Anyways, ultimately varying and unreliable results are typical for pencil mods.

Wouldn't you get a better vmod if you just dropped a tiny bit of solder where the pencil should be? that would create a better connection and last longer. Just that if you cant solder properly you might get it really wrong!

I'd recommend soldering the resistor. As long as your iron heat isn't too high and you know a thing or 2 about soldering SMDs, you'll be fine and it's way less risky with the unkown resistance that graphite provides.
