This is something the mother will have to live with. All medical procedures carry risks and there have been many botchups with circumcisions. Circumcision should only be an absolute last consideration as there are many other alternatives that are safer (steroid creams, stretching, preputioplasty etc). A bit of reading on her part and this could have been avoided. Poor kid, the ridicule he is going to suffer when older, children can be cruel.

Agreed, I don't believe there should be exceptions - especially since cultural and religious reasons are not allowed when it comes to female circumcision.

i read this article as well and i have to say that firstly the doctor who advised that the child should be circumcised in the first place should have known better. yes this cuban doctor should be held accountable for his actions totally and utterly. but why in heavens name did the first doctor not know that at the age of five the child is still growing and nature does it's own thing when it comes to this issue.

Information on that sort of thing is a bit hard to come by, and many doctors don't know any better either.
