This industry player comment is an exaggerated stretch. Another low-cost airline will fill the void locally (even if in time). The alternative is to keep pumping billions into the SAA in the vain hope that it will eventually come right. Nope. No thanks. I would rather take my chances on it going wallop than spend another cent to prop up this relic. The ANC destroyed it, they can carry the ire for this.

I think the travel agencies are being a bit disingenuous. My wife booked an international flight with a local transfer and the agent advised that they would not book with SAA for any part of the trip so the local transfer was booked on BA. My wife had not thought of the possibility of the route being cancelled - the travel agent highlighted the risk and advised that they are refusing to book clients.

Don't get me wrong, I have no issue with what the travel agency did, but the travel agents interviewed for the article are saying it's the client's decision whereas in our experience it was definitely the travel agent who made that decision.

South African travellers are reluctant to fly with South African Airways, according to local travel agencies.

The national airline cancelled multiple flight routes in recent weeks, which meant it had to refund regional and international travellers while providing alternative flights for domestic travellers on Mango Airlines.

So who is paying for what maintenance if they have no money ?

Very poor, even bad headline. Scared implies fear on safety grounds. The article talks about reluctance based on the risk of cancellations.
The article says flights have terminated to many internal destinations which are not so. The proposal is still a proposal and only comes into effect at the end of the month if accepted and implemented.
Passengers are avoiding SAA because of the risk of more cancellations.
This is nothing more than fear-mongering and very bad journalism.

Yeah this isn't a scared to fly issue, this is merely people being risk averse and wanting to fly on an airline that isn't currently threatening to cancel all sorts of flights.
