Pepsi shortage?

Heard from a manager at the local SPAR that there are issues with Pepsi products; something to do with local rights and distributors and whatnot. Don't know the details.
I'm hearing the same thing - apparently there's a new supplier/distributer (Softbev?) who recently took over but their stocks have run low so they're ramping up supplies. It's supposed to be resolved soon.

Are you saying Coke is sweeter than Pepsi??
Definitely.

Not yet, but close though,

The market leader in SA is Coca-Cola by ~50%, then we have Tiger Brands (Oros, Energade, etc.) at ~10%. PepsiCo is third with ~5%. 35% includes all the other smaller margins grouped together, incl. beverages owned by the larger trading entities sold under licensed agreements by other entities. I don’t know where Quality Beverages are positioned in 2015, but they made a merger deal with SoftBev which has recently taken over PepsiCo bottling in SA and I think this is where the shortages are coming in due to various reasons...

Quality Beverages with their merger may be positioned 2nd to Coca-Cola in 2016 in SA.
I was referring to Checkers as per your post. Jive has been displacing other brands including Bashews.

I don't mean from a sugar content point of view, but from a taste point of view yes Coke I find much sweeter than Pepsi now that I no longer drink sugar.

I was a die hard Coke addict and struggle to drink it now unless the entire glass is filled with ice.

Same way I couldn't enjoy Whiskey before and now do, and prefer beer over the cider that I always drank previously.

On topic...this might have something to do with it all? http://www.drinkstuff-sa.co.za/sa-drinks-stuff/575-pioneer-to-exit-its-pepsi-business Although they do say it wasn't going to happen.

I am one. Although my Coke habit has now been sorta replaced by Monster. Today so far I have had none to try see how it goes. Pretty good actually :p

Definitely.

Quality Beverages and Shoreline merged into SoftBev, Quality Beverages upped their share, but I can't remember the specifics. All I know is that they have three manufacturing/bottling plants and that they grabbed the Pepsi deal from Pioneer Foods. Before the merger Quality Beverages was struggling to be profitable... If this succeeds through 2015, they may have the 2nd largest stake in the beverage market share. I don't even know if they got the Pepsi deal, it was still rumoured in June, or so I believe...

Yeah, that is true, but I thought Bashews was still approaching the kiosk entry to market? I have never seen Bashews sold in the Western Cape in retail that is why I ask, but you can get them at near any kiosk or at a home seller in the Western Cape.

Anyway,

As has been widely anticipated, PepsiCo has announced the appointment of SoftBev, the national soft drinks company, as its sole licensed bottler in South Africa, Lesotho and Swazilandand with distribution rights in Botswana and Namibia.

Strictly speaking, Jive is now bottling Pepsi ;)

I'm finding lots of references that contradict that. Apparently the sugar difference & chemical composition is not hugely different.

You have sugar in your coffee?

I found the easiest way to finally break the dragon's back was to get off the sugar in other beverages and suddenly my Coke need became less and less.

Now I'm down to buying 2 x 2L Pepsi's for a whole weekend shared with the family. When it's done it's done.

Might also explain why suddenly Pepsi products have been the same price as Coca-Cola when they were often a rand or so cheaper.

PnP no longer stocks Bashews, but Checkers/Shoprite has it for now. They are selling off their stock according to senior staff.

It's not about the content but the taste.

You are basically saying because the ingredients are the same or close it should taste the same, but if the process is different so is the product.

Same way generic meds aren't the same as name brands even thought the contents are the same, because the synthesis differs.

Neural Correlates of Behavioral Preference
for Culturally Familiar Drinks

http://eugrafal.free.fr/McClu-et-al-2004.pdf

Coca-Cola® (Coke®) and Pepsi® are nearly identical in chemical composition, yet humans routinely display strong subjective preferences for one or the other. This simple observation raises the important question of how cultural messages combine with content to shape our perceptions; even to the point of modifying behavioral preferences for a primary reward like a sugared drink. We delivered Coke and Pepsi to human subjects in behavioral taste tests and also in passive experiments carried out during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Two conditions were examined: (1) anonymous delivery of Coke and Pepsi and (2) brand-cued delivery of Coke and Pepsi. For the anonymous task, we report a consistent neural response in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex that correlated with subjects' behavioral preferences for these beverages. In the brand-cued experiment, brand knowledge for one of the drinks had a dramatic influence on expressed behavioral preferences and on the measured brain responses.

TLDR:
People are dumb. Their perceptions are shaped more by the media more than independent thinking.

And all wine is made from grapes...so it's just the marketing machine telling us they are all different.

Such bull****.

I can blind test Coke and Pepsi for you 100/100 times if you like.
