Perfecting PC sound

Ok, so I'm about to get a set of Z5500s for my home setup to run my PC, 360, Wii and Dstv. My question is this: Is my onboard sound from my MSI P965 Neo mobo good enough for my PC games to play in 5.1?
Here it is:
High Definition link controller integrated in Intel ICH8 chip
• Audio codec Realtek 883
• Compliance with Azalia 1.0 spec
• Flexible 8 Ch. audio with jack sensing

*cough*
yes - as far as i know... haven't come across any issues so far with MIDI inputs.

We setup a friends studio machine with Pro-Tools and every plug in we could get our hands on.

Works 100% with his old Creative Audigy2 card with a USB keyboard.
When we installed the M-Audio card, nothing changed... worked perfect! Sounded a bit better with a few of the racks performing better with the higher quality DACs

ASIO 2.0 support from the lads at "Steinberg" so i guess it is GM compatible MIDI no?

this is the card I installed on my machine:

But if you really want to pump music into your machine, rather hit the studio cards like the one we put into my mate's computer:

Like I said... I'll never go back to a Creative card.

Pure studio cards are overkill for me, i have a 2 usb capture devices at present, what I am having an issue with is my Sonar and it not finding midi devices present on my current system.

Admittedly since my last machine was lightning struck I built a new one and have just run with my default built in sound till i needed to go and buy a card, which happens to be now :p

Please can someone recommend the best and cheapest 5.1 sound card that I can get for my PC to take advantage of the Z5500's 5.1 and THX. The sound needs to be used for both gaming in 5.1 and surround sound on DVDs. Thanks.

Further to that, is it worth spending on a card if my onboard soundcard (realtek something or other) supports 5.1? Is there a marked difference of having a dedicated soundcard?
