Is there a program(s) available to permantly remove previously deleted files from a harddisk without having to format the disk.

In other words make deleted files unrecoverable. I am now using a file shredder to delete sensitive files but would also like to remove files that I have normally deleted before.

I have to ask, why so paranoid? Who is going to grab your hard drive and spend hours (or money) on it to recover your previously deleted sensitive files? Just wondering.

You don't need hours to recover files. A program lke Recuva will recover deleted files in seconds. I'm doing sensitive work for some companies on my laptop and need to permanently delete documents afterwards. (A requirement from some of them if I want to work for them)

Ccleaner has, besides others that remove history/activity-type telltales, a [wipe free space] option; check it out.

BCWipe and even PGP has a file shredding utility as does Tune Up Utilities (trial).
