I am wanting to set up one of my old machines as a torrent server. I don't mean to allow peers to connect to it, what I mean is putting a torrent client on it and having it download everything for me which I can then access across the network. Obviously, I will need it to do certain things:

-Restart after power failure (quite sure I am gonna get a lot of these - thanks Eskom)
-Make sure PPPoE connection is always on
-Bandwidth monitoring/statistics
-Ease of sharing across the network
-Easy remote access for starting new torrents, etc.

So what should I go with? I was thinking of loading Windows Server 2003 with Azureus Vuze? What would you suggest?

I would suggest investing in one of those new fangled African Potato reactors that has been mentioned in another thread today!

Given it will only have one OS, there is a BIOS setting that automatically has your PC turn on if power is cut by anything other than pressing the power off button. Can't remember the setting now.

Then you will need the OS of your choice. I will assume you will be using XP.

Have uTorrent in the Windows startup folder

Enable network sharing on the folder to which you will be downloading files.

Setup VNC Server on this machine.

I think you will also need to ensure that all the computers are on the same workgroup (assuming again all your network computers are running windows).

If your router establishes the internet connection, then the router will look after the connection to the internet. If your router is bridge or you just have a modem then there is a setting where you setup the connection to have it reconnect when the connection drops.

Have no clue re the bandwith monitoring/stats.

I would like to set up a PPPoE connection rather because I will be using a different account to download with.

I was planning on using Server 2003, though I might go for Linux. Still pondering...

I dont get the elaborate "server" setup you are reffering to. Basically you just need another machine running XP and then use Remote Desktop to manage your torrents from any other PC in the enviroment.

-If power is really an issue get a UPS.
-Your router will ensure an always on connection and will restore the connection after a power failure
-Bandwith monitoring --> Your choice of app.
-Ease of sharing and remote access = XP.

I am not talking about anything "elaborate", as you may suggest. I have already said why I would rather not make a connection directly through the router. And, considering it will be used to "serve" information, it will, in fact, be a "server".

I am merely asking for suggestions on what would be best to use for this sort of set up.

with a little bit of scripting you can email the torrent files to the pc and have it automatically start the downloads

Well that is a BIOS Setting.. like mentioned earlier

-Make sure PPPoE connection is always on
You can set up a PPOE broadband dial up connection that dials automatically without asking for username and password, also set it to redial if connection dropped automatically)

-Bandwidth monitoring/statistics
Install a application such as NetMeter

-Ease of sharing across the network
Easy File Sharing Web Server is a file sharing software that allows visitors to upload/download files easily through a Web Browser (IE, Mozilla, Netscape etc.). It can help you share files with your users, customers and partners. They can search for and download files from your computer or upload files from theirs. The files on your PC can be accessible from anywhere without special software. Easy File Sharing Web Server also provides a Bulletin Board System (Forum). It makes it easy for remote users to post messages and files to the forum. The Secure Edition adds support for SSL encryption that helps protect businesses against site spoofing and data corruption. It is also a web based file manager especially developed for administrators who want to organize and manage files remotely.

Remote desktop coupled with a DYNDNS address.

Why spend the bucks on Server ? ... presuming you are the only person connecting to aforementioned server it will be a waste.

Use µtorrent !! it has built in personal tracker and less intensive on the machine.
Also +/- 80% of torrent spreaders use it :)

if you run it on linux:

you can setup a cron job to check every x minutes if the pppoe connection is still running.

you can use deluge as the torrent program and have your desktop manager load it automatically on startup.

you'd have to setup the box as a samba server in order to share the files across windows and linux. i'm pretty sure there's plenty software to use to access it remotely.

I use Linux with torrentflux for downloading my torrents. I don't ever have to log into the machine, I don't even run X (so no desktop). Torrentflux is a web interface for managing your torrents, so you can log into it with a browser. Nice to get torrents started from work - low on bandwith (the remote admin part).

I don't have the power concerns though because:
1. The power has never gone out at my house
2. I'm running it on an old P-III notebook - about 2 hours of built-in UPS :D

Now that is what I am looking for!
