Hi

I need to join the gym. If I dont join now, Im going to end up like all the other fat people. I dont want that... :(

I lack personal motivation though, and also am not clued up on what to do and quite frankly couldnt be bother to read up on it and whatnot.

How does one go about selecting a personal trainer and what are the usual rates?

Im on discovery and plan on signing up with Planet Fitness around the corner from my office.

I lack personal motivation though,

Then you won't get very far unfortunately. That's the single most important thing when klapping gym. You need to be absolutely obsessed with it or you will get bored and quit.

This is quite true. Rather find something you like doing, cycling, running, rowing, martial arts etc and do that.

R250/hour for a PT (which apparently is the going rate) is all the motivation I need.

anything else useful you have to add? :)

Nice post. Was actually considering doing the same.

Just to add I've heard of friends getting together and splitting the PT fee. So two of you benefit.

You seem to do this often, go on a rampage at people honestly trying to help or warn you. Why bother posting on a forum anyways if you aren't interested in actual advice? Ask any trainer, if you are not motivated you are wasting your time.

Ass.

Poephol.

Meh, calling people names is a lot less fun than I remember from grade 1.

I go on a rampage when people dont bother putting any thought and effort into the delivery of their posts.

You trying to help? Sure doesnt sound like it. Your attitude stinks.

I specifically tell you that shelling out a lot of money is all the motivation that I will need. I know myself better than you do? and I ask you if you have anything else to add, and Im friendly, with a :) but you reply with your **** attitude.

If you honestly trying to help, you need to work on your delivery.

Actually what he says is true, no one here can make you go to gym and non one who goes to gym will tell you it is easy, it is up to you to go and change, there are thousands of gym members who pay monthly gym fees and don't go, what will paying some PT extra make a difference to that? My gym has got 8000 members where only 2000 are active every (mate lives next to the GM).

I'd advise to first start off by just walking the dogs/running around the block if you can do that for a month then progress to the gym - from what I see from the PT's is that they just do funny callisthenics exercises and cardio minimum weight training so not really that good.

Oh and another tip: fix your diet if you are gaining weight.

nice thread

i also need to start going and am about as lost as you, the personal trainer seems a bit pricey but i suppose once you used them for a few days you sort of get the idea and can continue on your own.

Difference is that there's no one you're letting down, but yourself when it's just the gym membership. With a personal trainer it's like having someone else you need to prove yourself too and not let down. Same principle as having a gym buddy.

I can definitely see his logic.

Maybe we need a "GYM BUDDY" thread. So all those in the same area that need a training partner for the extra boost can hook up.

Yes, its called accountability. Makes people do things they usually wouldnt be able to do normally do under their own steam

Best way to do it is go with someone. If you can with someone that already goes even better as they already have the motivation and commitment issues sorted. From there you can both make sure each other go and makes it easier to steer clear of the "not today, I'll go tomorrow issue."

This is how I started off and now I go a few times a week by myself as it's become a way of life for me.

Remember that even if you aren't going to diet properly etc going to gym is more a lifestyle choice rather than just an I'm going to gym choice.
