Personal WiFi network

/me has gone off wi-fi ... other than internet connectivity, there is not much point to having it around the house. I find myself transferring such huge files all the time that the wi-fi does not serve me. I could not be bothered to set it up... besides it is a security risk as it is now.

Gigabit networks FTW! :p

+1 - wifi is for my Android G1 and notebook (internet mainly), otherwise it's gigabit

I use a WiFi network for the simple reason that I use my laptop in more than one place at home... and the amount of cabling I would require from my room to the router would top 40m... which I would have to take through the ceiling ().

but that is exactly what I did... I ran it through the roof to all the rooms where I use it.... glued it neatly in the corner. Presto... no more mucking about with signal strength and slow file transfers.

Just make sure you don't run it in the roof alongside any power cabling.... but it can go to a maximum of 100 meters.

To take it through the roof isn't fun. Too many cobwebs up there...

What's the problem with proximity to power cables? I think my roof space is cluttered with all kinds of criss-crossing cables

The idea is that emf creates noise on the LAN cabel, but twisted pair is designed to lower impedance and therefore improve signal - regular house cables shouldn't be an issue these days... in the case of higher current carrying cables then perhaps, but certainly don't tack it right next to a power cable and cross over at 90 degrees wherever practical.

Power cables degrade the rate of transfer in CAT-5 and CAT-6 cables because they are not shielded enough. Especially where the network cables runs parallel to the power cable. Crossing over a power cable is not a train smash, but avoid it if you can.

I can see whole new breed of enterprises poping up... wi-fi spot resale..
Buy one hour of wi-fi time and sell it to 8 ppl around you .. 700% profit....

lolies..
