Pervasive broadband, wherefore art thou?

For a number of years there has been a call to bridge the digital divide in South Africa, but this vision will not be achieved unless there is a much stronger focus on pervasive broadband. This is the view of Danie Steyn, Intel’s regional business manager of Sub-Saharan Africa.

According to Steyn, the time is right for government to step in and create rules around connecting underserviced areas.

As much as I agree with this, I certainly don't see THIS goverment doing any of that: their fingers are too deep in the existing pies to give a damn about "underserviced areas" without it enriching themselves somehow. Although Infraco might go "some" distance - it too is serviced by those same fat cats.

It's like there's a cANCer about that needs to be surgically removed first ...

Our current government isn't going to do anything about this. Not only are their fingers in the pies as you've said, they're also not interested in educating the masses. If they were educated, they wouldn't be voting for them with how little they're currently doing to uplift and improve South Africa.

On a non-political note, this IS an ideal opportunity for local ISPs to innovate and come up with solutions to this ongoing problem. Perhaps adding suggestions to the islabs.co.za site and seeing if something can come of it?

HA! No ways..this will suck ass, government shouldnt force the IS companies to do they're dirty work. This is supposed to be a free market,based on demand=service=$/R. No, if they force the telco's to do this then we, the current IS subscribers will pay for other monkeys to connect (probably for free). I say no, let government connect them if they wish to do so, but not from my wallet

P.S..isnt like 95% of the somewhat populated regions already covered via 3G or edge atleast?
