Petition to have local traffic cap increased

Hi all, I thought of starting a petition to iBurst to have them increase local traffic speed after you are capped :D

I know SA's bigges problem in terms of bandwidth is that darn SAT3 cable, so if we don't use that cable I see no point in still having our traffic crawl.

And they do not have to give us full 1024k (although it would be nice), maybe like 512k local traffic...

Other option is that your local traffic does not count toward your usage...

Any ideas?
 
I doubt this will ever work, for example people will simply bypass the system and connect via proxies to get international access.

At least when iBurst is capped it still works albeit slowly.
 
The thing is, someone has to pay for SAT3 access. If you use a proxy then that proxy has to pay for the SAT3, not iBurst.

At least that is how I see it.

I'm just wondering.
 
I'd really like for Iburst to do something about prices/cap/speed, but I do not want a bad vibe between them and us. Hey, if Telkkom can put all their 192 customers on 384 with no extra charge, I'm sure our orange friends will do something as well.

I'll sign such a petition, but with reservations.
 
I hate Telscum for deciding that '3GB should be enough for everyone'. How did the b@st@rds come to that data amount?

Now all ISPs have decided that 3GB is the magic data amount for all South Africans.
 
I will also sign the petition for more local and international bandwith and for cheaper prices and faster speed. Iburst must upgrade the speed and cap if telkom going to bring out 4Mbit adsl lines
 
id also sign/phone in/ write to them, whatever it takes. But I doubt you are goign to get a responce or any action taken with just wanting the local speed increased after cap. Most people (probably 80-90% of iburst users) will find very little use for this. Its hardly worth Ibursts time to figure out a way to differentiate between locla and international and then set a new speed for once you are capped local.

I think youd be better off saying something like we will leave your service if you dont actually do something about a real change in pricing, ie cap, per month or at least per gig price. They are no longer going to be a very fast service with HSDPA moving up (and already faster) and ADSL being 4 times the speed. So they dont have much over the competition at all.
They have to do something, we just need to give them some incentive.
 
Ekhaatvensters, good point, but I do not think they really can do anyting about international traffic. After all, they do pay for the SAT3 usage.

Now local traffic on the other hand should not be that expensive.

Another option would be to have local traffic not count towards your usage.
That way they offer something no other isp offers. (Well, TelScum used to have it this way. Why did they stop if anyone knows?)
 
When is Telkom getting 4mbps and how many thousand a month will it cost?

Now local traffic not counting is a great idea, but Iburst might loose out on too mcuh money if they allow that, might not quite be feasable for them.
They would have to charge you a bit for the local, just for costs of running the network etc.

And they dont use SAT-3 cable, they go through verizon (UUNET with their own connections) anda few other uplink providers, mostly sattelite based im geussing. But they pay these guys per gig or Mb that they use. So you have to think abotu that for international.

But local I dont know about... dont they pay Telkom somethign for diginet lines or for getting onto their local network or somethign like that? Im not shure if they get their local for practically free like Telkom ADSL does.

Vaughn: They havent announced a date ye tfor the 4mb service, its just coming soon.. probably by next year maby earlier? No idea really..
The cost can also only be speculated.. im geussing around R2000?
But i have nt been imn touch with Telkom for a while, Im not even really shure what the price is for 1mb atm..
 
And BT (British Telecoms) is already on 8Mbps!

Thank you, Telkom, for f@@king South Africans daily (and for the last couple of years) with your PATHETIC ADSL offerings - hey, I heard on Highveld Stereo Telkom reckons 384kbps is the best value 'broadband' package in SA.

384kbps - broadband? GET REAL!!
 
Full access for local traffic post-cap would be great. The problem I see from Iburst's perspective is network congestion. On ADSL this is not an issue, but each Iburst basestation is limited to 20Mbps throughput. I'm certain Iburst are not going to want "free" post-cap traffic clogging up the network and impacting on their potential income growth. For them it is not an issue of direct cost, but one of opportunity cost.

But the time is fast approaching when Iburst are going to have to come up with something innovative to prevent a flood of desertions to ADSL. They can't just point at international wireless price comparisons (which are favourable). The main reason Iburst has been popular here is the relatively high cost and low speeds of fixed line solutions. That is rapidly changing, and Iburst are going to have to find clever ways to keep their customers satisfied.
 
^^ Gatecrasher, this is sooooo true, 384kbs isn't too far off what I get from a loaded tower, and for the current price equal to the old 192....well....attractive is the word comming to mind.

Unfortuanatley, I only forsee more VAS in ibursts immediate future. For some reason I just dont see them decreasing prices or increasing caps...
But I might be completley wrong. Yet i still doubt they will be able to stem the flood of people very easily.
 
There is only one reason I am using iBurst and that is the 64k you get when capped.

I do not like the k@k telscum has of "well, uhm, you see, the thing is, when the exchange in your area, um, let me see, oh you might get more than 3gigs but you have no way of knowing when you will get capped..." bull. With iBurst at least I know i get internet for the entire month even when I exceed my cap.

A petition? You dont need a petition. Contact iBurst and inform them you are cancelling the service and tell them why. Enough people do it and they'll probably listen.

Hell I would even be happy paying another R50 p/m to get this feature. Most of my browsing is South African and all my work is local, I only need really need international traffic for my sports news and patches...

All the broadband suppliers should offer free local or cheap local at least.
