That probably helped, but ultimately there's no law forcing you to give in to strikers. If you can hold out longer than they can you've effectively won.

But that is not what she did. The strike, if carried out correctly, would have garnered widespread sympathy strikes, effectively crippling Britain.

Striking is effective against private businesses because they are also losing money as long as a strike continues. The idea is to make it cheaper and less damaging for them to increase wages. Unions are an absolute necessity, although they do themselves sometimes run amok.

But this shows creative thinking on the part of the management. They have obviously offered a deal that is to the benefit of the company and the employees.

In almost all cases the unions fight for 1 or 2 or maybe three percent. Strikers are not paid for the days they're on strike, unless they use up some of their leave. In these instances, fighting for one or 2 percent is entirely negated when they effectively lose an entire day's pay. So even though the unions may achieve a "moral victory", the workers suffer the consequences of overall loss of earnings.

I'm surprised they accept deals that don't include full pay for period while they were on strike.

I can definitely understand the sentiment. For most of these people 6% is not even a cost of living increase. They're coping with inflation. Mboweni and the MPC are hammering them by repeatedly increasing interest rates. Housing is going up significantly faster than the inflation rate.

True, but the problem is unions know this and can therefore continually strike when things don't go their way, even if its not to the benefit of their members they are at least then seen as "doing something". Ultimately if nobody stands up to them they'll continue to do this, if they realise they can't get their way it may ultimately save the company money in the long term.
