Peugeot new city car isn’t short of safety either, with six airbags and the usual driver assistance systems: ABS and ESP.

As mentioned, the 108 is very light, registering a kerb mass of only 840 kg. The 1-litre three-cylinder engine is not turbocharged and produces only 53 kW and 93 Nm. Those numbers are humble, and without turbocharging, there will be a significant loss of urge at altitude, but the five-speed manual gearbox features comparatively short ratios. With only 840 kg of car to get moving, the 108 should be responsiveness enough for city commuting.

Priced at R179 900, the Peugeot 108 Active is positioned competitively in regard to its rivals.

Peugeot has finally come back to life. Many motorists have probably wondered what had happened, but so far Peugeot has made a great comeback with their 5008 SUV and now the little hatchback 108.

From the first glance, Peugeot's style on this compact car invites attention. Thanks to a sophisticated urban design replete with dynamic lines and meticulous details, the Peugeot 108 is the very model of stylish elegance and gets envious glances wherever it goes.

A demo 208 which is more spacious and refined can be had for less money so if one really wants a pug that will be a better bet.

Verdict

We drove the updated Toyota Aygo sibling almost a year ago (October 2018) and noted its revvy engine, funkiness and fair ride handling. Given the mechanical similarities, the 108 1.0 Active feels near identical. However, the differences lie in the specification where the Toyota can only muster 4 airbags and does away with the smartphone connectivity. The Peugeot boasts 6 airbags and has a few more features for similar money. The real cherry on the cake is the aftersales offering. Dubbed 'Peugeot Pride', every 108 comes with a 5-year/100 000 km comprehensive warranty, a 5-year/ 100 000 km comprehensive service plan, roadside assistance, 24-hour customer care contact centre, licence renewal reminder, as well as service plan and warranty expiry notifications. What this means is you're essentially only paying for fuel and tyres, making it cost-effective to own.

Peugeot also claims that any of the brand's customers who encounter a mechanical issue with their vehicle will be afforded the use of a courtesy car and that replacements parts will be made available swiftly (and it'll be competitively priced). It's a bold statement of intent by Peugeot South Africa and we can understand the brand is desperate to right wrongs, change preconceptions and restore some pride. Given its asking price, we'd be surprised Peugeot if made much of a profit on the 108 we suspect it's to pinch market share from the established players in the segment... How long will this keen price last? If this is what's on offer and Peugeot can fulfil its promises, then the 108 must be one of the new-car bargains of 2019.

Depends what's you definition of better, 6 airbags compared to 2 of the Grandi10, brake assist and stability control which the i10 does without. It's a give and take on other convenience features, the Grand obviously has more space and more power but on safety features alone this little Peugeot is untouchable.

But as per the aforementioned confectionery-related proverb, trade-offs are inevitable when adopting a car of the 108’s diminutive stature. That 3,5- by 1,6-metre frame means rear legroom is limited and the boot will only just cope with a weekly shop. And the narrow cabin occasionally sees larger front occupants becoming a little closer than would normally be deemed comfortable, especially when shifting gears.

Even so, with a five-year/100 000 km service plan and warranty backing up its competitive pricing, the 108 is an impressive ownership proposition for those on a tight budget looking for something with a bit more panache than most city cars offer.

lets see if any make it into rental fleets,
as that's always the litmus test of a car model,
so all the abuse a car might go through in 20 years, gets done in 2

also parts availability, service items, all the rest of it.
if rental fleets start having it, must mean its good enough for your average guy.
 
What a well specced and put together car.
I must say that, i was rather amazed by the spec, features and that warranty and service package is a WINNER.

As a daily run around, i would take plus its well priced.
 
REVIEW | The Peugeot 108 is a sweet little city car and looks good too

If you've ever watched those manga cartoons where it looks like the hero character is down and out but roars back emphatically to become victorious, the Peugeot 108 draws stark comparisons in automotive terms.

Peugeot has been somewhat quiet in terms of new models and at some point it even looked as if they might pack up and leave SA. That is not the case as the French brand has made a comeback with a new 5008 SUV, and now there is a new kid on the block with Peugeot flexing its muscle with the latest version of its compact 108.

Well packaged

South Africa has a fairly strong contingent of small city cars with the likes of the Toyota Aygo, Suzuki Ignis, and Renault Kwid, but the 108 breaks the mould somewhat as a more 'finesse' option to buyers, sharing company with the VW Up, and Kia Picanto. With a price tag of R179 900, it is slightly cheaper than the Up (R180 900) while the Kia Picanto comes in considerably cheaper than both of them at R162 995.

In a nutshell, it has what it takes to go up against the regulars in its segment being considerably priced and giving buyers another option to consider.

The 108 comes with a 5-year or 100 000km comprehensive warranty and a 5-year or 100 000km comprehensive service plan.
