Lions left-arm spinner Aaron Phangiso has been reported for an illegal action following his team's win against Warriors in the semi-finals of the Momentum One Day Cup on February 25.

In accordance with the ICC's regulations and Law 18 clause 2.25, Phangiso's action will now have to be tested in "as soon as reasonably possible but, in any event, within 21 days of receipt by the Player's Home Board of the notice." He is expected to be tested on Friday at the ICC-accredited High Performance Academy at the University of Pretoria. Fourteen days after that test, an ICC appointed specialist will furnish the body with written report which will determine whether Phangiso's action is legal or not.

This is the third time this year Phangiso has made headlines. In mid-January it emerged that he had been prevented from boarding an international flight following South Africa's ODI series win in India because he was drunk and disorderly and CSA had subsequently handed him an unknown sanction. This week, Phangiso had to apologise for being caught on camera pretending to sniff an unknown substance off his leg during South Africa's T20 against England at the Wanderers. Phangiso was in the dug out and his gesture took place when South Africa were batting. He said it was a lighthearted joke but understood that in a country with a drug problem, it was inappropriate.

I've said this for a while already... wearing loose fitting shirts to hide the bent elbow. His quicker delivery is a chuck. When he is under pressure it becomes more apparent.

If it has been ingrained in his action for this long, will he not struggle to change it? Also, it may even make him ineffective without his bent elbow.

Was he even effective with a bent elbow?

South Africa spinner Aaron Phangiso's bowling action has been determined as illegal, following independent tests conducted at the University of Pretoria's High Performance Centre, an ICC accredited laboratory. The assessment revealed that all of Phangiso's deliveries exceeded the permissible 15-degree limit.

In accordance with the CSA Regulations for the Review of Bowlers Reported with Suspected Illegal Bowling Actions, Phangiso has been suspended from bowling in domestic cricket, with the board also confirming that the bowler will not be selected for the first two home T20Is against Australia, starting March 4. Phangiso will, however, remain with the squad to work alongside South Africa's spin bowling coach Claude Henderson and CSA's high performance manager Vinnie Barnes in an effort to remedy his action.

Phangiso's chances of being retained in the squad for the World Twenty20 in India hinge on a second round of independent tests next week.

"The timing of this issue for Aaron and for our World T20 squad is clearly inopportune but we need to deal with it. We will work hard to remedy Aaron's action and have him retested as soon as practically possible," Haroon Lorgat, CSA's chief executive, said. "We are fortunate to have an ICC accredited Laboratory in South Africa and this will certainly make a quick turnaround possible."

Phangiso had been reported for a suspect action following his team Lions' win against Warriors in the semi-final of the Momentum One Day Cup. It was the third time this year that Phangiso had made headlines for the wrong reasons.

In January, it emerged that Phangiso had been prevented from boarding an international flight following South Africa's ODI series win in India because he was drunk and disorderly, forcing CSA to subsequently hand him an unknown sanction. Last week, Phangiso had to apologise for being caught on camera pretending to sniff an unknown substance off his leg during a T20I against England at the Wanderers. Should Phangiso fail to make the squad for the World T20, South Africa's selectors have time till March 8 to find another back-up spinner for Imran Tahir. Eddie Leie, the likeliest replacement for Phangiso, suffered a hamstring injury during the Momentum Cup final and was forced to leave the field.

So, he's going to completely change his bowling action, developed over years, in under two weeks?

The Cobras can't be happy about this IMO.

Opinions on this???

Strange. I don't recall whoever the sports minister was at the time standing up for Johan Botha when he was suspended for an illegal bowling action. I also guess that Phangiso's two other indiscretions (fake snorting coke in the dugout during the England series and his airline antics) are conveniently swept under the rug. It seems ok to drag SA Cricket's name through the mud as long as you're the right ethnic hue.

And anyway, isn't this an ICC ruling? They don't give a fig about SA's transformation objectives. If CSA go to them cap in hand and ask them to overlook Phangiso's bowling action for the sake of transformation so that he can play in the upcoming T20 WC, they'll get laughed out of the ICC's headoffice and rightly so.

Bill Shakespeare could only dreamed of material like this when he was composing his satirical farces.

Well, that is interesting.

After Chris Gayle's performance at BBL, one would have to wonder. I know his was a sexist thing, but with the ICC pushing that issue into the mainstream (I mean women's cricket in general) making the game more colourful may just be in their sights as well.

It is neither fair nor rational.

It is political, racial rubbish.

We can agree to disagree. I am a firm believer in seeing a representative team in sport. And I personally find like the lack of colour in the cricket and rugby teams reprehensible. I find it deeply disturbing to have lilly white Langeveldt held up as a player of colour. I'm frikkin darker than he will ever be.

I am however against the political interference at the wrong place. The powers that be would do far better to build the sport at grass roots level so that actual talent of colour rises to the national team on merit.

But, I do think that on both counts, Phangiso shouldn't be in the team.

Totally different issues....

This is about a scientifically proven illegal bowling action. There is no debate or political correctness (Gayle) at play here. This is very straight forward: Phangiso is a chucker and may not bowl in any form of cricket until he has corrected his bowling action and been passed by the relevant authorities.

This has sweet fanny f'all to do with race.

Surely you jest?

Nothing at this level is that straightforward.

Who reported him after all these many years? Not that I know, but why now?
