Does anyone have hands-on experience with both these platforms (in equivalent setups) ? I've read a lot about it and the general consensus is that Phenom "isn't all that", but one thing I've noticed is that they are comparing high-end Core 2 Quads with the Phenom (which I understand has only been released in the mid-range for now).

I read somwhere the C2Q outperform them...
But then again as you said, only the mid-range has been released.

I also read somewhere the Phenom has a bad design flaw

Yes,have run both..Sold the Phenom and now using my Q6600...
Was not impressed by the Phenom..

Ya I've also read about that design flaw, but as I understand it's more in the manufacturing process. Which means that they'll be quite expensive for a while still

I use a Phenom on an ASUS M2N32-SLI board and it works great without any problems.
The TLB Erratum issue is only a minor problem that was actually picked up in server class usage.
The TLB (The translation look-aside buffer) causes the level 3 cache on the CPU to corrupt.
There is of course the BIOS workaround that eliminates this problem but at the cost of performance.
I had a 6000+ scoring 10750 3dmarks and my score went down by 800 points after installing the Phenom. (TLB patch applied)
The AMD overdrive utility does not allow me to disable the TLB patch so I can not say what the real performance results could be. I think it is because I am still running a Nvidia chipset which is not fully supported by AMD’s overdrive utility.
My conclusion is that the Phenom is not a bad CPU at all. It runs cool and even the beats the Q6600 in some areas. Don’t expect high overclocks unless you have one of the latest AMD 7 series motherboards. The B3 Phenom’s should be released in April so we will have to wait and see how much the performance gain will be.

So in other words get a intel.

Get an Intel for now B3 stepping Phenoms are not out and even when they are out, I personally don't like RD790 based boards and still think 590 is better.
When nForce7 boards for AMD come out and the newer bug free B3 stepping or later of the Phenoms come out then that may be a viable option but right now its not worth the effort.

Great posts... very informative...

Is there a rule of thumb as to what AM2 boards are Phenom-compatible? Specific chipsets?

Damn and I was just saving up for that new phenom cpu on the myadsl news yesterday...
9100e or a or x or something

Welcome to the forums!

Which bios version are you running on that board? I'm picking up stability issues on 1703

I am running the latest BIOS ver 1802 and have not experienced any stability issues.
I get the latest files from the Asus ftp site.
ftp.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/socketAM2/M2N32-SLI Deluxe

The b3 stepping phenom CPU's have launched yesterday btw.

they launched 2 tri-core cpu's and 4 quad cores, the 9850 is the top dog (also has a black edition available) 9750, 9650 and the 9550 is also available. All without that tlb bug. (stupid bug).

I'd be getting the 9850 :P (when it's available for purchase :( )

the 8400 and 8600 is the tri-cores released. they have the tlb bug btw :(

The 9850 BE costs just 235$ (wich would cost around 2200R(cheapest) when it get's here)

the other models is just for oems I think since I couldn't get a price on them.

Double post because I can:

I found some interesting info, when looking at games who are multi threaded they actually perform better then the q6600 wich may mean that they can be better for future games (multi threaded ones). but that's I've only seen it with less popular games
and for over clocking some where able to get the 9850 up to 3GHz whilst other only to 2.8
