Phil Masinga has died

Many people disliked Masinga, he used to be too much of a pedestrian sometimes, until he scores, then everyone would celebrate.

Money is not an issue in the least, on a local scale compared to rugby & cricket.. How many times have players been called t the national team and declined because they're playing for european teams where the money is much better. Much easier to compete against 12 and 20 teams as cricket and rugby does compared to a 100 + official international football teams.

We're ranked number 72 in the world, the usa where soccer is not even big is ranked 25th by FIFA. There are only 4 teams from africa ranked in the top 50. Soccer in SA is the sport with the most money & sponsorship thrown at it, more than any other african country. It's also the local sport with the most fans and viewership numbers. We keep making excuses for bafana when they don't even do well in CAF (13th), individual players do extremely well in europe. Sounds like our education system.
 
Fun fact, he arrange for my favourite South African Player of all time: Lucas Radebe a trial at Leeds. He was also my favourite striker, I never understood why he was disliked so much. RIP.

International football teams barely play competitive matches against 10 different opponents per year. Having a large pool of opponents 90% of who you wont ever face doesn't make it more difficult than rugby or cricket. We're not even one of the top 10 teams in Africa even though we have better resources than most African nations.

SA fans are a fickle lot. Sometimes it has something to do with team loyalties. We were fairly new to the international arena back then I suppose?

What others are saying is that SA simply doesn't have a chance of winning the world cup with countries like Spain, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Brazil, Argentina, France, Belgium, Holland, etc. in the competition.

Furthermore, it's true that factionalism, nepotism, ethnic politics (to some extend), etc play a role at development level.
 
Watching those goals in the Youtube clip there is another player that died too young ie. Gary Speed who had a long and successful career in England.

Also a glimpse of Tony Yeboah there.

RIP Big Phil.
 
Looking back now it dawns on me how much talent we had back then, the fact that Mark Williams, who was also a quality striker came of the bench to score the two goals just says it all.

It's the same teams that regularly win these international competitions. We are barley competitive in these competitions and that's a problem. I've always gotten the impression that the football fraternity in South Africa are arrogant, thinking that we're good enough without really putting the proper structures in place to make us successful at international level.
