Article in a post above says Cancer.Anybody know what he died of? He was relatively young.
My dad had an irrational hatred of Masinga.
Pirates fan?
Many people disliked Masinga, he used to be too much of a pedestrian sometimes, until he scores, then everyone would celebrate.Nah, Chiefs but he disliked him even when he played national squad. I think Masinga might've cost him a bet or something.
Maybe it's because people think they're useless. What have they ever achieved in the international arena compared to the proteas or boks? Money is not an issue in the least, on a local scale compared to rugby & cricket.. How many times have players been called t the national team and declined because they're playing for european teams where the money is much better. I also don't see thee same pride in wearing the jersey as with cricket & rugby for example. And the you get the mafia like soccer bodies.
EDIT: Sorry, this post is not about reflecting badly on the man that is Phil Masinga to be clear.
Much easier to compete against 12 and 20 teams as cricket and rugby does compared to a 100 + official international football teams.
International football teams barely play competitive matches against 10 different opponents per year. Having a large pool of opponents 90% of who you wont ever face doesn't make it more difficult than rugby or cricket. We're not even one of the top 10 teams in Africa even though we have better resources than most African nations.Much easier to compete against 12 and 20 teams as cricket and rugby does compared to a 100 + official international football teams.
Fun fact, he arrange for my favourite South African Player of all time: Lucas Radebe a trial at Leeds. He was also my favourite striker, I never understood why he was disliked so much. RIP.

Another great player.Watching those goals in the Youtube clip there is another player that died too young ie. Gary Speed who had a long and successful career in England.
Also a glimpse of Tony Yeboah there.
RIP Big Phil.
It's the same teams that regularly win these international competitions. We are barley competitive in these competitions and that's a problem. I've always gotten the impression that the football fraternity in South Africa are arrogant, thinking that we're good enough without really putting the proper structures in place to make us successful at international level. What others are saying is that SA simply doesn't have a chance of winning the world cup with countries like Spain, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Brazil, Argentina, France, Belgium, Holland, etc. in the competition.
Furthermore, it's true that factionalism, nepotism, ethnic politics (to some extend), etc play a role at development level.
