Phone call costs to be cut

Poor people will now be able to access emergency services numbers even after their phones have been disconnected by Telkom, Communications Minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri told MPs on Thursday.

Delivering her budget speech in parliament on Thursday, Matsepe-Casaburri said that government plans were afoot to make telecommunications more accessible to the poor by lowering call charges.

Matsepe-Casaburri also said the country's five telecommunications operators would be setting up a toll-free number for citizens to register their service-delivery related complaints to the government by the end of June.

Why haven't they implemented it sooner?

Greed, plain and simple.

It is heartening to see that they are rectifying their mistakes.

Wonder if said toll-free number's going to be overloaded?

So the toll free number's going to be run by some sort of government agency like ICASA? Not holding out much hope then...

We don't need a stupid toll free complaints number, only in SA could this be billed as a major policy initiative anyway, give us true competition and we'll vote with our feet if the service is bad.
