Hi,

Do you need an isp in order to make phone calls over a fibre line? My grandmother has gotten fibre installed in her flat, but she can't afford to pay for the package+the phone line, so I'm wondering if it's possible to just have a phone that is connected to the fibre line? And if it is possible, is it cheaper than Telkom?

If she has a phone number already, port it to a VOIP provider, but you will need a new handset.
You do get free softphones, but I wouldn't recommend it for non technical people, the physical handsets just work better.
Freshphone is one example that provides you with a VOIP number with no monthly fees, and pay as you go.
You can also use an old telkom phone with a voip provider if you use one of these:

But for the price you might as well get a new handset.

Okay I am just going to play devil's advocate here (fully aware I may get flamed), but would your granny not be better served with a Telkom all-in-one ADSL package that includes a landline? Just in this particular case that may be better?

You should check with the ISP's when ordering her fibre package, some providers does include VOIP capabilities with a handset, think telkom does as well

Unfortunately, Fibre doesn't just carry voice. You need a service provider to actually provide call origination and termination. She could use Skype or Whatsapp calling - but that means the recipient would also need to be on these services. Otherwise there are a few VOIP services to choose from.

There is also a Fanvil ATA device which works like a charm and will convert any existing handset to a voip device.

Euphoria, the company that host pabx's have a free voip account under the brand Fresh phone. Then just buy yourself a Yealink T40G and set it up with the account details and load airtime on it. Fresh phone works very well, I have used it to test their network before I hosted my pabx with them. Their per minute charges is also very reasonable and calls on their network between devices are free.

I use freshphone it's a prepaid voip service, check their website, since I had an old telkom phone I got the Analogue telephone adaptor from comx computers. You can use the more expensive ip phone option or go with the adaptor and old telephone. Their international call rates are so cheap.

Freshphone needs ftth, doesn't this mean my grandmother needs an internet package? Or is the ftth requirement just referring to the installed line?

BTW, the fibre was installed at the expense of the bodycorp, she needs to take out an internet package at her own expense, but I'm trying to save her some money with her phone contract

Who is the provider? Telkom fibre has a phone line over fibre.

Yes correct, it will work on LTE and a fast adsl line as well. I don't think you can request for just a voip line through fibre alone.

SADV laid the cables, but I think Sandman1 is correct as I sort of came to the same conclusion that you need an internet package to make use of fibre as a phone line.

My complex I used to stay in South Africa had Telkom fibre and they used that for phone without needing internet if you wanted to.

This is the current Telkom form I helped someone fill in last week. Voice on Telkom fibre is standalone and it uses a normal phone plugged into the ONT.

We just plugged in our normal phone into the fibre router Vodacom supplied, obviously after transferring our number over to their VOIP service.

No special phone needed.
