hey guys, been having some frustrating issues since yesterday and hoping i can get some good advice, im on mweb 4meg uncapped and yesterday afternoon it started disconnecting every few minutes and when it eventually stabilized it was EXTREMELY slow, i just assumed it was more issues with the upgrades they are doing but it was strange because even with all the shaping i almost always get full browsing speed, streaming etc.

i only noticed my phone line was down later in the afternoon, totally dead even though i could still connect with adsl, green light on router etc but its been extremely slow, im guessing its due to some technical issue on telkoms side, i called them a few times today to get it sorted, got the usual "technicians are on it" etc, recently they stole cable in my area and the phone lines in much of the surrounds including myself was dead for four days before it was fixed, this may be related i suppose

thats the speedtest

also im using a billion 7300 router and this is the stats in gui

Operational Mode ADSL G.DMT
Upstream 512 kbps
Downstream 1920 kbps
SNR Margin (Upstream) 12.0 db
SNR Margin (Downstream) 5.5 db
Line Attenuation (Upstream) 31.5 db
Line Attenuation (Downstream) 53.5 db

from what iv seen on the net those stats are bad, prior to this the line behaved well, no disconnects, full speed for http etc, any idea whats going on? help etc will be appreciated
thanx.

SNR Margin (Downstream) 5.5 db << There is your problem, i open a thread about it myself, i downgraded my line today from 10Meg to 5Meg and i got 20dB now.

For better understanding read here:

WoW and Line Attenuation (Downstream) 53.5 db, you are so far from the exchange ;/ you can be glad to have ADSL

Probally be best to ask Telkom to downgrade your line to 1mb, but it will still not be best but worth a try less disconnects, it will be more stable for a 512 line.

Also what i tested Billion Routers give crap results in noise, Telkom routers are best :)

i reckon this is fixable though, like i said i doubt my stats are usually that bad because my adsl is usually very stable and runs at full speed, shaping aside ofcourse, from what i have read you cannot establish a stable connection when the snr is far below 12db, all this just started when the phone line went down yesterday.

shirou, just read your thread

Line downgraded from 10Meg now to 5Meg:

Zyxel:

noise margin downstream: 17 db
attenuation downstream: 40 db

Telkom Marconi:

noise margin downstream: 20 db
attenuation downstream: 35 db

D-link:

noise margin downstream: 16 db
attenuation downstream: 43 db

Billion:

noise margin downstream: 14 db
attenuation downstream: 44 db

So now i am using the Telkom Marconi, but still on the 5Meg line ;/ Looks like i wont be able to go higher then it will drop again, according to those stats it must stay online now, and the Telkom guy told me this area here in Parow is copper still + i am 3KM away from the exchange so i can forget about 10MB line now without getting disconnected.

was wondering if your problems also only just started recently or if they were always there from the start? in my case i never checked my attenuation and other stats until yesterday so have no idea what they looked like when things were going well
