So, I wanted to look at getting a phone for my 5 year old son just to contact me when he's away from me so I thought of just getting a Nokia as all I needed is voice calling.

But then I thought that an Android would be nice for things like GPS tracking, giving him an alarm, etc. But I want to be able to restrict access so that he can't download any games (yes he knows how to do that :-D) or whatever.

Any ideas of devices that won't break the bank, have a good battery life and are robust? Doesn't need to have awesome specs, it just needs to be able to voice call and do some basic things.

My nephew has a tablet with a sim card in, works perfectly

A phone for a five year old? :wtf:

Get him a cheapish phone, put your google account onto it for play store and restrict purchases and downloads.

Get him a 3310 because it's better than an iPhone6!

Agreed, how often does a 5 year old go off on their own?

At 5, this is the type of phone they should have:

I'm divorced so unfortunately he's away from me 50% of the time. And I would like him to be able to call me whenever he misses me.

I see there is a special on the LG Leon on MTN for R129pm.

Yes not too keen on it, but he's soon going to be on holiday for a while and would like him to call me whenever he wants to.

Was the divorce that ugly that the ex won't allow him to phone you via her phone?

Keep them critters away from phones for as long as possible.

Let mummy or whoever else let him use their device.

One of the reasons I reckon a Smart-GPS-Tracker watch is a better idea as you can phone from it but ONLY specified numbers.
Also keeps them away from the darkness on the interwebz.

Phone for a 5 year old... seriously?

Ok so if you are seriously paranoid, make sure it is network locked, can only SMS or call you or your hubby or aunt/uncle etc. Set this up properly.

Do not give him/her a UI to take their focus away from real life. Kids with smartphones and tablets grow up with all sorts of developmental issues.. dont be one of those parents...
